Christofias needs to keep a cool head

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Christofias needs to keep a cool head

Postby YFred » Sat Oct 03, 2009 11:54 am

A worthwhile read for all our GC friends who are on the extreme side of politics. The value put into delaying the talks to last later than December and the gains the Muhtar X will get being hollow is quite enlightening. Unlike the darkness bullshit they are being fed by the nationalist media and growing like mushrooms. Although no doubt a very worthwhile exercise in it self to promote nationalism and all that crap

Christofias needs to keep a cool head

PRESIDENT Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat have found something new to row about when they are not negotiating for a settlement deal – the time-frame in which this would be achieved. The row began in New York, with Christofias’ speech to the General Assembly angering Talat who responded with a call for a set time-frame for the completion of ongoing negotiations and a UN arbitration on issues on which there had been no agreement.

Talat’s demand for the speeding up of the negotiations was repeated in front of the cameras, when he crossed over on Wednesday, prompting Christofias to go on the offensive the following day, immediately after the military parade. He resolutely stated that there was no way he would accept artificial time-frames and arbitration, even though he was “seeking a settlement here and now”.

The only way to speed up the process, he said, was for Talat and Turkey to change stance and base their positions at the negotiating table on UN resolutions and the High Level agreements. But there was no way he could agree to the violation of basic principles; nor was he prepared to move beyond certain limits to satisfy the Turkish side.

His stance drew praise from the hard-line camp, but it also gave the impression that he felt under pressure.

Press reports suggested that Ankara has been promoting the idea of setting a time-frame for the negotiations, because it does not want to have the Cyprus problem affecting the evaluation of its EU accession negotiations in December.

The Erdogan government, reportedly, wants to preclude the possibility of Turkey’s evaluation being put back by six months, which appears to be Nicosia’s objective, if Turkey failed to open its ports and airports to Cyprus planes and ships. The EU would also have to take a stance on the matter if Ankara did not implement the relevant Protocol, by December and there was no sign of a settlement agreement.

If Talat and Christofias are not near an agreement in December, Ankara would argue that the latter was not interested in a settlement and that his objective was to block Turkey’s accession talks. How successful this tactic would be is difficult to say, even though it has become very clear that the Commission would not want to find out. The European Council would much prefer not to have to deal with the implementation of the Protocol in December, which is why Ankara has been pushing for the setting of a talks’ time-frame. It will have the support of the Commission on this.

Rather than making defiant public statements, Christofias should consider how to exploit Turkey’s wish for a breakthrough by December. Perhaps he could secure a couple of major concessions from the Turkish side in a possible settlement. While success is not guaranteed, this is worth a shot as the implementation of the Protocol would be nothing more than a symbolic victory, of minimal practical value.

Whoever wrote this piece has the journalistic competence of an amoeba.

It was Erdogan who boasted after the Annan talks at Burgenstok "we got everything we wanted without returning one square inch of land or removing a single soldier". The writer makes no reference to this mindset of the power that commands the whole security setup in the north of Cyprus. If this attitude is not referred to then Christofias' position is portrayed out of context and obviously it seems hardline.

One side has an occupation force of 40 000 on the island and 400 tanks, and the other has its possible use of a veto that can delay EU accession talks by 6 months, and the schmuck who writes the article can only see the the hard stance of the veto holders. Talk about schweinehundt!

You're totally wrong there. But you should understand that people in the south are sick of being pushed around by Turkey and your puppet regime. It was clear from the beginning that there would not be any timeframes nor arbitration. The only reason you want timeframes and arbitration is to get a 2nd annan plan on the table which is in the interests of Turkey. It's not going to happen this time. Get ready for some heavy shit in December.
