Ö. Özgür in his village.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby EricSeans » Fri Oct 02, 2009 7:56 pm

He was a gentle and kind Cypriot who spoke from the heart. He filled me in on the foibles and realities of reporting the Cyprus issue back in the early 90s. One quote I remember getting from him was "Cyprus is a very small place - much too small for war." If only there were more politicians like him.

There aren't any Turkish villages. Only villages stolen from us. If you want to live with Turks then leave and live with your people. Otherwise learn to live in Cyprus as a Cypriot and keep our names to our villages. 200,000 Greek Cypriots should not suffer for the enslavement of 100,000 people. Turkey gave you an inferior education and you know nothing about the history of Cyprus. So please stop. All the Turks in this chat room prove how uneducated they are. They prove with high colors that they cannot read, write, or speak with one ounce of intelligence.

Look, I am ksenos/yabanci, eretikos/gaour, and I have been drinking (with Greek and Turkish-speaking friends, in Constantinople/Istanbul); but what you're writing is bullshit. You know as little about the history of Cyprus as the Turkish nationalists.

If they haven't been bored by ignorant people already, *true* Cypriots (Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots) will happily educate you as to how there were "Turkish [Cypriot] villages" in southern and northern Cyprus before and after independence, and how both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot paramilitaries destroyed Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities.

I agree that '200,000 Greek Cypriots should not suffer for the enslavement of 100,000'; but "[o]ne million Cypriots" should not suffer for one hundred idiots.

And, just to be clear, for the Hellenists, it embarrasses you when this rubbish is spoken; and the international community does not listen to this rubbish; so if you want to be taken seriously, start speaking honestly.

Hey Smarmiarse, Christine is right. There are no Turkish Villages, those peole were just the remanents of the first invasion and the GC had to endure that shit for 400 years. Now all of a sudden they have rights and the GCs have none, so if you want honesty F*ck Off kseno this is not your business, go study your mongolian mates in Turkey and leave Cyprus for the GCs.

Way to go Christine. They just don't like to hear the truth.

Tell you what, we'll leave Cyprus alone if you'll leave north London alone.

Bad Cocktail, first of all, some of those villages were created by the Ottomans, and therefore have always been Turkish Cypriot.

And some of those villages have been Turkish Cypriot for generations: how many centuries does someone's family have to live in Cyprus to become Cypriot?

Plus, at least some Cypriots supported the Ottoman conquest, because the Ottomans got rid of the Latins and freed (as far as I know, most of) the Orthodox from serfdom.

If the Turkish Cypriots are "just the remnants of the first [Ottoman] invasion and the GC had to endure that shit for 400 years", then the Greek Cypriots are "just the remnants of the first [Mycenaean] invasion and the Cypriots had to endure that shit for 3,200 years".

But if you insist, I will go study my Constantinopolitan Greek friends. Oh, you didn't mean them... Okay, I'll go study my Greek Cypriot friends in Istanbul. You didn't mean them either?

If anyone is a traitor, you are, because your attitude encourages and excuses Turkish nationalist beliefs about Greek Cypriots, so your attitude encourages and excuses Turkish nationalist policies.

Here aresehole, the President said it better than I could:

EU countries don’t need guarantor states’
By George Psyllides

PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias yesterday reiterated that Cyprus has no need of guarantees and custodians with rights of intervention.

During the annual presidential speech to mark Independence Day, Christofias said Greek Cypriots sought a solution that would secure the human rights and basic freedoms of all its people.
“It is our view that Cyprus, a European Union member-state, does not need guarantees and custodians with rights of intervention,” Christofias said.

Using its guarantor status as a pretext, Turkey invaded in 1974 dividing the island ever since.
Greek Cypriots are weary of Turkey retaining this right in any future solution but it is highly unlikely that Ankara would be prepared to even discuss changing the status.

Christofias said the effort is to achieve a solution soon because more problems were created with time.

He stressed however that Greek Cypriots would not agree to a solution that was not based on principles just for the sakes of time.
And “we will never accept a solution that is not the product of negotiation between the two communities,” the president said.

He said the international community has been convinced that the two communities are the protagonists in the process and that there would not be arbitration and timeframes.

Christofias said he was still cautiously optimistic “despite any problems in the negotiation.”

He said the progress achieved so far was not enough.

“We expected to have more convergence on various aspects of the Cyprus problem. The differences continue to be significant,” Christofias said.

To achieve a solution, Turkey must change its stance – should prove in deed that its cares and works to achieve a solution that would serve the best interests of the Cypriot people, Christofias said.

He warned Turkey that its EU course would not be without obstacles if it continues to refuse to fulfil its obligations to open its ports and airports to Cypriot traffic.

Christofias also urged political parties to support him at this critical junction, in a clear call to his partners in the government who have criticised his handling of the negotiations in numerous occasions.

[Blah blah blah...]

I believe in human rights and freedoms for all; I have absolutely no idea why you emboldened the bit about Turkey invading, as if I didn't believe Turkey had invaded, or as if I didn't object to Turkey's occupation; and I believe any possible real solution must be based on principles... So, wtf?
