Moving to Cyprus

Postby keithw » Mon Sep 28, 2009 1:43 pm

Hi to all. Just wanted to pick a few brains.

My wife and I currently live in the UK and own an apt in Paphos. We have now decided to retire to Cyprus in 6 Months time (Mar/Apr 2010). My circumstances are:
Below UK retirement age, have owned my Cyprus apt for 5 years, don't plan to take up full time employment, plan to have my car (purchased 11 Sept 2009, 5 years old) shipped out along with minimal personal possessions and plan to take up permanent residency. Questions:

1. Is it correct that my car will exempt from import duty?
2. How long do the Cyprus authorities grant to register a car?
3. Can anyone recommend a reputable removals/shipping company (I have approached my local (reputable) removals company for a quote for my car (Honda CR-V) and pesonal possessions and they said i would need at least a 40 Foot container at a cost of £4100. To me, this seems quite expensive)).
4. Is the vehicle registration process as much a nightmare as i am lead to believe?
Any input would be appreciated.

Many thanks, Keith

I moved here with 'minimal' personal possessions (8 cardboard tea chest sized boxes) - managed to ship it all out here for under £600 (no car) it was not long before I wished I hadn't bothered with even that much stuff.

Shipping charge is way over the top. What the car will cost you depends on the engine size.

in a poll on another forum people were asked regarding their move "what was the one thing you would change" = the top of the list was bringing the car ! registration can be a nightmare. the CR-V is about 2 ltr i think and you will also be loaded on age of the vehicle.
Maximum time allowed to register your vehicle is 12 months i think.
just as an aside if you have any pets in the UK think seriously before bringing them to Cyprus...

No problem with getting a car registered, providing you are patient. It only took me 4 months to sort out 2 that I brought from the UK, and I didn't pay any duty, just registration fees.

If you are not coming here for over six months suggest you get a smaller engined car thats a year or two old. Its duty will be small too. A Clearing Agent at one of the Ports (mine was at Larnaca) will do the whole process for you for a fee, you get a months registration when it arrives at the Port so time to sort it out. My OH bought a car in Cyprus and the small one we shipped over in a container with a few items.

The cost of duty (which was small)registration, inspection, mot, cy plates, and the fee for Agent came to £500 cy in 2007. But you can save the fee and do it yourself.

I,m sure that cars that don,t pay the duty if sold within five/ten years then will have to pay the duty, but I cannot find the info on this.

As a footnote my car was sold this month it was a little Peugeot 206 1400cc 03 UK, we paid £3800 in the UK, we sold it in Cyprus for €4500
