Hi to all again, yes i have been a bit quiet due to work (i'll have to give that up!) and other distractions. Well, just like to say thanks for all replies. No i haven't been put off, just a bit surprised at the difference in costs from what i have been quoted to what many of you have experienced. Receiving your replies has now prompted more questions, if you don't mind?

1. My car is 5 years old, some one mentioned i may be loaded on registration due to age, why?

2. When my car arrives in Cyprus, (i presume limassol?) what documents will i need to show customs in order to drive it away immediately?

3. If i decide to have my CRV serviced by a Honda dealer, is there one in Paphos? will it be more expensive that UK? are there plenty of reputable independent garages?

Someone suggested i change my car for a smaller engine as it will be expensive to register. Firstly, i only bought it 3 weeks ago so that is out of the question. It's a 2 litre, what kind of cost am i looking at ?

Appologies for all the Qs but, as i'm planning to move there in 6 months, i need to get as much info as possible.

Also, appologies for not replying to the PMs i received but, as i'm new i am not allowed as yet to reply.

Many thanks,

Keith

This may give you more info on the duty payable

http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/customs/custo ... enDocument

My car arrived at Limassol. I'm employed an agent there.

Bring every doc you've got - V5, purchase receipt, MOT etc. You'll need them at some point in Cyprus

It's not difficult to register the car in Cyprus. Took me just over 4 hours - paying duty, registration fee, MOT. Seem to remember that you need to have owned the car for 6 months before you can import it but I could be wrong

That did not include registration of around cy£2.5k!!!! yes,you have not missread it was 20 thousand cyprus pounds 26 english pounds,so we shipped it back!! With just precious personal things cy£2k in total to ship back after a 9 month stay.No work, horrible neighbours, lying cheating developer but thank god for the nice people we made friends with and still keep in touch with.

Had you owned the Pajero for minimum of 6 months? if so, how come you had to pay import duty? Every web site i have looked on seems to confirm that no import duty is levied on EU citizens if car has been owned at least 6 months. Or do the Cypriot authorities make it up as they go along. If so, this is worrying, as i plan to ship my 2.0 ltr CRV (which i will have owned 6 mths) along with pesonnel effects next Mar.

Every post i read regarding moving to Cyprus has many different tales, good and bad, i never know which one to go by.

Also, how many people have moved to Cyprus and regretted it or are happy with decision, it would be nice to know. Hope this question isn't too intrusive?

Regards

Beverly - I think the one word in your reply 'developer' goes a long way to explaining your horrid experiences in Cyprus.

Not everyone has the same bad time. I looked into it and decided that, much as I would have loved to, it was just not worth shipping my car.

I did some research and discovered that most of the folk who had shipped lots of stuff here (big items of furniture, fridge freezers and so on) regretted having done so quite soon after arriving. So I decided to bring nowt but my laptop and a few personal possessions and my dog!

It is a good idea to research Cyprus forums and ex pat brit forums before making any expensive commitments re moving here (or anywhere else far from the UK) IMHO.

If you are coming to settle in Cyprus, you have owned the car for at least six months, bring uitility/council tax bills that cover the last 2 years (not all of them), P60's and a few bank statements for the last 2 years, you do not pay duty.

I brought a 2.0l Honda Accord over and the registration was around E800, my 1.4l Renault Megane was around E80.
