It's unlikely; they would have to raise tax on petrol to compensate; but Governments usually like to have two revenue sources, so that they can raise one, one year and raise the other, the next.

Also, how will possession of car insurance/MOT be checked?

So, I think it will stay with us :-(

i found the article in the link below some time ago, and when i taxed my car at xmas the assistant told me that it could be the last time?

i heard that in Greece in some town the residents refused to pay road taxes because the roads were not being improved and a lot of cars were being damaged by this. so maybe they are trying to put this into effect before people take action and riot, then our beautiful roadworks will be very publicized all over the world :)

the article states "socially generous" so who will be the judge of this social group :) better start making friends in the right departments then, so as to be exempted from paying the road tax :)
