I agree entirely, but I had a Cypriot mother-in-law!

You can use the argument that they still go to heaven being innocent babies ... until they are two-three years old and then make a game of the ritual and they'll love it. :D

My mother is as religious as they come but I've managed to put it off for a dozen years so far ...

I predict some turbulence in the Paphitis household very soon about this touchy subject for me at least....

You will do as your told!

The mother hands the baby over to the priest, and he in turn to the godparent. At no time are mothers alowed to hold, comfort or aproach the baby. My advice is to keep dummies and water bottles on hand for people to pass to baby and also to try to feed before you go to the church so he wont be hungry and start crying. My mistake last year when Christening my son was that he was hungry, but bless him he didnt cry that much. After the service, dipping in water 3 times, dressing etc is over the priest will hand the baby back to the mother (she should kiss his hand but i dont do that), remember that the nappies for the next three days must be kept and burnt, all clothes sheets towels etc must be washed on the third day by the godaparent, as well as the baby (not all at the same time). Remember the water must be kept from all the washing, and poured somewhere it will not be troden on. Also remember that no kissing of the baby is allowed by anyone for three days, untill the baby has been bathed by the godparent. When washing the baby on the third day, it is said to be good luck for all present to throw coins into the water, brings prosperity to the baby. Thats it really, yes it is bad not being able to hold / touch baby but it doesnt last long, about 30 minutes i think, the worst part obviously is not kissing the baby for 3 days.
