Integration of North and South is inevitable

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Christine, you must try to understand, that even if it was totally Turkish problem (which I do not accept for one moment), The keys of the locked door is being kept by the RoC which has been hijacked by the GCs.

First we have open the door. If the RoC does not open the door during these negotiations, we will have to break it down. We can deal with Turkey but not while we are locked by the RoC.

Kibrisli Turk wrote:The integration of the North of Cyprus into the Republic of Cyprus is not just inevitable, but has already started, leaving us with one real question as Turkish Cypriots, Is Turkey mocking us? I think so.

Here is the evidence of how Cyprus is automatically unifying:

1) Many Turkish Cypriots travel freely to and from the Republic of Cyprus (ROC) on a daily basis to work.

2) Many Turkish Cypriots (at least 22'000 out of a possible 87'000) all hold Republic of Cyprus passports, travel to Europe via Larnaca and consider themselves as a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus when they are abroad particularly in London, Germany, France and etc.

3) The border is gradually being pulled down via the opening of more and more check points on a yearly basis since 2004.

4) The Universities, or at least most of them in the northern part of Cyprus administered by us Turkish Cypriots have very close links with those in the Republic of Cyprus. There is even a department in the University of Cyprus dedicated only to Turkish Studies.

5) The so-called "TRNC" I have lived in all these years is still not recognised, as was promises many moons ago - how funny it is to play with people's lives, particularly in this day an age.

6) As for those Turkish Cypriots who refuse to obtain their rightful Republic of Cyprus passports and citizenship rights before travelling abroad, they are subjected to the same treatment as if they are citizens of non-EU member Turkey. This also requires them to have to apply for Visa from that particular country, and if they are granted, before leaving the "trnc". What a joke in the year 2009.

7) All Turkish Cypriots in the northern area of Cyprus now only talk about buying land is original "Turkish" owned pre-1974 areas! Why? Because the know that the Greek Cypriot original owners will one day return to their land and that we will also be able to return to ous in Larnaca for instance. I gues we can now, but are holding out until a mutual agreement is made.

There are many other reason I can pick on regarding this question, but I find it extremely unfortunate and sad on how Turkey has really tricked us Turkish Cypriots since 1974. Their unfulfilled promises, lies and now our land being occupied by a majority of Turkish settlers.

I see Turkey as a huge coward, one that can't gain the recognition of an area so small as northern Cyprus since 1974 when other countries through intelligent and bold politics have - like the UK in the Falklands and etc. What a bunch of donkeys we Turkish Cypriots have been left with. It's now obvious that President Christofias and Talat will fail once again in the establishment of a Federal model, northern Cyprus will be left alone again until probably the year 2018 or so until Turkey realises what it must do to join the EU and then it, Turkey that is, will do what it should have done in the first place.....remove its troops from Cyprus and re-establish the Cyprus constitution as how it should have done back in 1974 after on a few months of initially intervening.

I don't believe Turkey can, or will be able to gain any recognition of the "TRNC", or have the so called Isolation removed - that is just a lie they have been feeding us Turkish Cypriots to keep us quiet. Turkey is a weak and non-thinking entity when it comes to the Cyprus problem and I hope some of its government officers are reading this posting in a realisation of how fed up, angry and frustrated we Turkish Cypriots are for wasting our lives and our so called born "trnc" children's lives.

My son was born in an unrecognised state. He is now studying in a university in England and has only two passports - A "Republic of Cyprus" passports as he's never coming back to the "TRNC" to live again, and will soon be granted a "British Passport". That's what our Turkish Cypriot politicians have created from their waste of time policies since 1974. If they were not going to push and fight for the recognition of the "TRNC" then why the hell did they bother illegally declare the "TRNC" a republic in 1983. We would have been better to have remained as the "Turkish Federated State of Cyprus" until a united model was found where at least we would not have been isolated for so long.

I do not blame the Greek Cypriots for our isolation, but the Turkish government, and our stupid puppet one in the north for wasting so much time and lives. Where has it got us all....exactly, nowhere?

If our leaders fail to unify the island before next April and Eroglu gets into power, then I believe that either a war is going to break out as we Turkish Cypriots are frustrated or we will be forced to live under the Republic of Turkey, which would be a disaster.

As for what I have said above in point form, I hope the Republic of Cyprus speeds up its property campaign, its opening of the border check points and its issuing of Republic of Cyprus passports to all 87'000 Turkish Cypriot ROC Citizens before Turkey grows a brain!

Hello Kibrisli Turk,

To start with I am a GC who writes occassionally in here. Most of what you say are todays sad realities struck upon the lives of our TC brothers…

We all have been fools my friend, and we all have been exploited by the motherlands. Imho the Cyprus problem started even before the Republic of Cyprus was formed in 1960 and it just escalated to today’s situation. It was a game in which Greece wanted to expand (by taking Cyprus or at least a big part of it) and Turkey wanted some extension in the sea. The ones to blame are not really them, but the MAJORITY of us the Cypriots, who supported their plans. When we realised our fault it was too late, we the Gcs realised it crystal clear in 1974, and it took you the Tcs a few years more…

So here we are to todays situation. It is clear that Greece is no longer interested (see their stance during the Anan Plan) whereas Turkey is still using the Tcs for her own plans-most propably to secure her way towards EU. Turkey knows she will never become full member, so she will use Cyprus to get the maximum out of her eventual "special relation".

There is a very strong point in your post that nobody commented so far: there where you talk about "so much wasting of time and lives". Although your views might be in the minority among the TCs, I don’ think any TC disagrees to this.

Yes my friend there has been a waste of the lives of almost 2 generations so far.Notice this waste extends to the Gcs too, especially the refugees. And it seems there will be even more. Surely there won’t be any solution soon, surely Talat will be replaced by Eroglu, and surely more and more TCs (like your son) will abandon the place and be replaced by settlers…

..... Just to add one more point that you left out, if I may. Then join this forum and be verbally abused by the very people who continue to support those ideas from the 50s and 60s.

I left the forum because I was verbally abused and I was abusing back twice as much.

I am going through it, but they will not push me out.

Haha, nice one. Keep on the good fight bro.

Welcome back Pyro....long time , no see

As I said before it is up to the Turkish Cypriots to kick the aggressors off our island. If they don't do it no one can. The Turkish government is lying to its people saying how they must sent troops or the Greeks will torture the Turkish Cypriots. The one thing that Turks don't understand is the Greek Cypriot character. We are the most gracious people on the planet. We have big hearts. All we want is the right to return to our homes. The right to live and work anywhere in the island. No restrictions. Once that happens you could not tell who is Greek/Turkish. It would be as it has always on Cyprus. True freedom. Just as in the South the mosques are not destroyed and are waiting for the Turkish Cypriots to worship there. However, the Greek Churches in the north including my church as been destroyed. That proves what the Turkish government think. Where is the justice? Turkish Cypriots brothers/sister stand up and fight against your slave masters.

I pray every day that our land will finally be free of Turkish agression. Cypriots or should I say true Cypriots are the greatest people in the world. However, it's the foreigners who make us take sides. When I was little I never feared Turks but now I do. I saw too much killing by the Turks. Too many of my loved ones died under the Turkish troops hands. I sorry I cannot forgive Turkey. Does that make me a bad Christian?

No Christine, you're not a bad person.

Without wasting too much time on religion ... they do say that to forgive is the greatest of the Christian Values... but perhaps it would help you forgive if the murderers had been brought before the Courts and before you to account for their crimes.

Sympathies for your losses.

Religion or christianity has nothing to do with this. Its an act of human against human. Terrible it is and unfortunately has been going on forever. Many wars have been fought between co-religionist too.

Are you saying that there are TCs who are so frustrated, they are ready and willing to go to war with Turkey?

Hello Kibrisli Turk

I am really interested in the (theoretical) possibility that there may exist a size-able number of TCs who would put the RoC first and foremost, before Turkey, and would even be willing to go to war against their oppressors.

Unless, I may have misunderstood the above where you say "a war is going to break out as we Turkish Cypriots are frustrated"?

I wonder, if the RoC supported such a war whether the TCs would fight, alongside the GCs, against the Turks?

I would really appreciate a reply as this possibility represents a glimmer of hope for the future of TCs ....

Interesting concept. This scenario happened in Yugoslavia.

Not terribly happy with war talk. Wars are ugly and painful.

Thinking aloud .....

The challenge may, in the light of what KT says in the OP, be the further easing of isolations on individual tissies in more of the same aid we have seen in the past four or five years with openings in the cease-fire line, passports and IDs, health care, educational and work opportunites.

All of this done without benefit to the Illegal Regime. Perhaps this increasing marginalization of Turkey's Regime with more liberalisations to ordinary tissies may, in time, make it near redundant.

It's the contrast between what the TCs could have if they supported the RoC 100% with what they do have with Turkey which may win them over. So I don't agree with more freedom of movement for those in the Turkish occupied territories.

Despite hardships -- and those are greatest for the GC refugees who cannot return to their homes -- I think a policy of shutting the crossing points, having given them this glimpse of what they're missing, may just precipitate some reaction.

Personally I am disappointed it has taken so long for TCs to see what Turkey is doing to them and it's a shame they are just coming back to the RoC for envisioned gains rather than righting moral wrongdoings ... But, if and when they are willing to take the side of the RoC against Turkey ... then we may see some preservation of the TC "culture".
