Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stressed that the normalization of the TRNC’s international status can no longer be postponed if the Cyprus problem remains unresolved due to the Greek Cypriot Side’s intransigency.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr Erdogan underlined the need for bringing about a solution to the Cyprus problem under the UN umbrella.
The Turkish Premier said the Cyprus problem can be settled by the end of the year, if all parties concerned act constructively in the negotiations process.
He said the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon should make active participation into the process to bridge the gaps that might remain between the two sides.
“Our goal should be to bring the possible agreement to the referendum by Spring next year, the latest” Erdogan said, warning that the window of opportunity for a settlement will not remain open forever.
Mr Erdogan emphasized that Turkey, as a guarantor power, will fully support any solution to the Cyprus problem that is going to be formed under the UN parameters which envisage the establishment of a new partnership state.
While complaining of the ongoing international isolation on the Turkish Cypriot People despite of their ‘yes’ vote to the Annan Plan in 2004, he said it is against equity to make the Turkish side pay the price for the non-solution.
PRESIDENT TALAT SAID ERDOGAN’S WORDS REFLECT THE TURKISH SIDE POSITION
President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the speech delivered by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the UN General Assembly reflected the Turkish Side’s views on the Cyprus issue.
The President issued the statement in response to journalists’ questions regarding the Turkish Premier’s comments on the Cyprus issue.
Asked his views regarding the Turkish Premier’s referral to the Cyprus Problem in his speech to the UN General Assembly, the President said it was known by everyone that Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have been acting together on the Cyprus issue.
Stressing that the international community should play a more active role on the Cyprus issue, as it did in 2004 during the negotiations on the Annan Plan, the President said `the United Nations, should become more active in the talks in a way that it will persuade the sides to accept the UN parameters. This is what Mr Erdogan said and we share the same view `.
Responding to another question, President Talat said that the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias rejected an offer made by him to hold a meeting in New York as Mr Christofias afraid that such a meeting would raise the international community’s interest in the Cyprus problem.
