President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said he received assurances from Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov that Russia fully supports Cyprus` positions in the effort to find a negotiated settlement.

Speaking after a meeting with Lavrov on Thursday in New York, President Christofias said the result of the meeting was very positive and noted they agreed that Lavrov would visit Cyprus in November to continue discussions.

``Russia unreservedly supports the implementation of principles in a solution of the Cyprus problem, and supports UN resolutions,`` he said, adding that Cyprus and Russia ``share common views on the Cyprus problem.``

He also said ``not even an iota has changed in the policy of the Russian Federation in the Cyprus problem and our cooperation will continue and will be enhanced even more, not only regarding the Cyprus question and the problems of the region but at the same time our cooperation in the economic, technological, tourist and commercial sectors and in all sectors we have signed agreements in.``

President Christofias said the Russia-Cyprus joint committee will be convening to plan further moves.

He also said Lavrov thanked him for Cyprus` stance on the latest UN General Assembly resolution concerning Georgia.

great Quid pro quo that - you compromise your principled stance about the rights of refugees and we will continue to give you platitudes.

Lavrov and Putin are both members or- were, and according to Putin, once you join you never leave!!
I think everyone knows enough about Russias dealings with Turkey to understand how much they will pressure them on Cyprus, without having to re-iterate it again here....

Interesting so Christofias is now in bed with Russia, Cuba and China, while Talat (through Turkey's directives) is sucking up to USA, Britain...

It seems like the Cold War is still alive in Cyprus....

Another classic case of doing the wrong thing!

Postby cymart » Tue Sep 29, 2009 3:16 pm

I have posted before about the mistake the Greek-Cypriots make in believing that Russia will ever damage its enormous financial and political interests with Turkey to help them, and this was reconfirmed by Putins recent visit to Ankara where he signed a number of high-level agreements,in contrast to Christophias much over-hyped visit to Moscow last year at which Putin did not even bother to meet with him!Even one of the senior AKEL dignitaries admitted recently that Russia looks after its own interests just like everyone else, and this includes opposing a solution to the Cyprus question which might increase Western influence here!
Believe it or not,I read recently that even DIKO, the 10% rejectionist party which spends most of its time trying to derail any chances of a solution that does not meet with its unrealistic and utopian demands, is planning a high-level to Moscow soon where it will have negotiations with Putins United Russia party and meet the man himself!Considering they are called the Democratic Party and whilst everyone knows that there is no real democracy left in Russia and Putins party is just a front for the corrupt elite to exercise political and economic power,I find this totally hypocritical and unjustified, especially for an E.U. member states party that never loses an opportunity to shout about Turkeys repressive policies towards the Kurds and Cyprus!Or maybe it is a true representation of what DIKO really are-a bunch of placemen and opportunists who will side with anyone to gain some share of power and influence and in this case, to put one over on the AKEL who have traditionally been the leaders in any dealings with Russia??

What is this idiot above talking about? Didnt Obama recently visit Turkey as well...talking about a special relationship? Cyprus is a non aligned country that tries to have great relations with both east and west. Cyprus is a true bridge between the east and west.

In just three short years: The west was able to rely on Cyprus during the Lebanon Crisis. Cyprus again demonstrated its support for western security efforts by recently stopping arms shipment from Iran to Hamas at U.S. urging. And last month, Cyprus signed the New York Declaration to coordinate with US, Britain, and others on piracy off the Somalia cost.

PS: Germany has great relations with Russia. France has great relations with Russia. Italy has great relations with Russia

PPS: DIKO this and DIKO that, isnt Christofias the President?

Christophias might be the President but...

Postby cymart » Tue Sep 29, 2009 4:10 pm

He is still trying to walk a tightrope to keep DIKO from leaving his government and this makes us wonder if he is looking ahead to the next elections and if he can get their support, rather than solving the Cyprus issue?

I am afraid that will be a tragic mistake and will lead to partition proper.
