To answer both:
most Brits don't even know where Cyprus is on a map or care about the division - the number of times I have had to give a potted history of the island even to world concious expats - I have over 300 people in my contact book here in Beijing and I doubt any have any knowledge of the Cyp Prob - ok half are Chinese but the rest expats from around the world.
As to the British Government they will do what ever they think is in the national interest, as will most governments, and as Turkey is a NATO member and EU aspirant and the UK has its bases they either don't really care (bar platitudes) or are happy for the division to continue.

Most Brits don't even know where Cyprus is on a map????? Why don't you tell that to the carpetbeggers in the North who bought stolen properties. You've got the wrong ones in your contact book

That is my contact book in Beijing. As to the Brits in the North yes they could find it on a map but most in the UK can't.
