Why is it so hard to get a decent job?

Postby joanna » Fri Sep 25, 2009 10:53 am

Im going to sound like im moaning now, and i realy dont want to, but why is it so hard to get a decent job in Cyprus? you either have to have some serious meson and get a government job, or know someone who knows someone in a shipping company.

I've been trying fo a little while now, and i guess i just figuered it would be a bit easier than it has. I've been to a few interviews and they all love me, and my CV is ok, i speak fluent English and Greek and they all love my English accent even though im GC, and i always get asked back to a second interview. So what is it? im starting to get paranoid that one of the two companies ive worked for may have said something bad about me. I do find it highly unlikely, im not perfect, but i always try to leave good impressions on people.

Being home with the kids is great, but i want to work. Im looking for a nice well established company, preferably in shipping as i have to say i do like shipping and would like to get a bit more experience in that field, idealy work 8-5, but i guess that may be whats putting people off employing me, as everyone works till six over here, and a net salary of 1200 euros.

Just wondering, does anyone else have any similar problems so we can share our woes? does anyone know if there are any laws in Cyprus to help / protect working mothers from discrimination? Thank you to anyone who answers, please try to write nice / helpfull things.

It has never been easy to find a job here, the market is very small, so appropriate jobs don't come up that often. Well paid ones appear even less frequently, especially now with the "crisi".

Ive been looking for about 2 months now. I agree it is hard to find a job, even though there may be no "crsis", employers in general seem to be using the staff they have rather than open up new positions.

Thank you for the Interorient link, i would love to work there, but i may be a bit under qualified for the position im affraid. There was a misunderstanding in the past they offered me a position, and i accepted, then declined as my boss asked me to stay (how stupid i was), and then a week later he sacked me. He basicly wanted to get back at me for wanting to leave the company and saw it as a kind of punishment. I tried re-applying to Interorient , but needless to say they were a bit miffed that i had declined what was a very generous offer. I dont blame them, but i would realy have liked to work there, but i was duped into staying at my job. Live and learn i guess.

Who are you using for references?

Is it the vindictive boss who fired you for revenge?

I know im going to sound stupid, but yes. He may be vindictive, but, he does have a good side sometimes, otherwise i wouldnt have stayed. His P.A is very professional, for her to have written anything negative, would have been false. I dont think she would accept for him to give a bad refference as she writes it, plus i would have found out, its a small company, and i am still in contact with various employees. Having said that though, i have requested someone get refferences from my two last employers for me, so i can check what they are saying about me, just to make sure

I think by law you can request to see references, so you are right to do that.

Since you've been out of the employment market for a few months now, perhaps you can take a less ambitious job, just to show your commitment and willingness, which may help ultimately getting something more desirable.

Thants exactly what i was thinking, just to get a bit more experience, and even if i stayed within the same organisation they may have an opening in another department at some point. Im not after the best postition in a company, im not realy bothered, it just seems that even the simplest of secretarial positions seems to be out of my reach. I was waiting for an answer from a shippigng company after having been to my second interview and being given very good feedback from them, only to be told this morning by the recruitment agent that they got someone with a bit more expreience (i have approx 3 years), and for what position, a receptionist. No offence to receptionists out there, but i do feel i was suitibly qualified for the position. As for being out of the employment market, was a bad idea to stay home for a bit i guess, but my eldest son was ill and my youngest was only 11 months so i decided it was best to stop for a bit, but i agree it does count against me somewhat.
