ECHR rules in favour of 18 Greek Cypriots
THE EUROPEAN Court of Human Rights (ECHR) yesterday ruled in favour of 18 Greek Cypriot appeals on occupied property cases, in a move described as ‘damning’ for Turkey.
The development was deemed “a great success” by the lawyer of seven applicants, Achilleas Demetriades, who said this would finally bring an end to a cycle of 32 cases. There is just one left pending.
Also pending are the penalties that will be imposed on the Turkish government.
“It is a great success,” said Demetriades. “With this decision, the court will move on to the third phase of the procedure, which is ruling the compensations. I am expecting Turkey to request permission to appeal the case, as it did with the previous cases, but I don’t think this will be given.”
He said the compensation would most likely be announced in around a year from now.
“All our efforts our now centred on the hearing we will have on November 18, where the court is going to examine the legality and effectiveness of the Property Commission in the occupied areas,” said Demetriades.
