In a war for democracy, why worry about public opinion?

“Whoever is in charge, it seems, the war on terror has truly become a war without end. Eight years after George Bush and Tony Blair launched it, with an attack on Afghanistan under the preposterous title of "operation enduring freedom" and without any explicit UN mandate, Gordon Brown has agreed to send yet more British troops to die for a cause neither they nor the public any longer believe in.”

Weeping mother calls for Blair to be held to account

“The mother of a British soldier killed in Iraq broke down in tears today as she called for former prime minister Tony Blair to be held to account for the "unlawful" conflict in Iraq.

Anne Donnachie, whose son Rifleman Paul Donnachie was killed in Basra in April 2007, was addressing members of the Iraq Inquiry committee at a regional meeting in Bristol when she made her tearful plea.”

Ex-Gitmo detainees sue UK to make evidence public

“Seven former Guantanamo Bay detainees asked the High Court in London on Tuesday to reject a government request to use secret sessions to hear allegations that Britain was complicit in their torture overseas.

Britain's government and intelligence agencies want parts of a claim for damages filed by the detainees to be heard in private, and to restrict their lawyers' access to documents that the attorneys say may prove whether Britain was aware of the detainees' mistreatment.”

After being disgraced in Basra, British War Criminals are now getting their arse whooped in Afghanistan…

Army wants to retreat in Afghanistan

“ARMY CHIEFS are drawing up plans to withdraw British troops from outlying bases in Afghanistan.

In what would be a significant change of strategy against the growing Taliban insurgency, they are considering abandoning several bases including Musa Qala, the scene of bloody battles that claimed 15 British lives. Army forces would attempt to hold only the larger towns in Helmand province.”

Britons think Afghanistan war unwinnable

“BRITISH public support for the war in Afghanistan is falling, while more than 40 per cent do not understand why British troops are fighting there, a poll released on Remembrance Sunday showed.”

I would say the great majority of the British public were and still are aginst the Army being in both Iraq and Afghanistan though unfortunately public opinion doesn't really count for much at the moment. Having seen the effects of war first hand I actually signed petitions agains entry into the war with Iraq. No doubt there have been war crimes by British Soldiers and they tried to cover them up at a local level but and that is a big but, it was not systematic or condoned by the High Command. At least there is recourse to law in the UK and even the Government can't prevent that. Presently there is an inquest going on relating to the death of an Iraqi detainee and due process will happen if there is found to be a case to answer.

“The Home Office says it will push ahead with plans to ask communications firms to monitor all internet use.

Ministers confirmed their intention despite concerns and opposition from some in the industry. “
