I often wonder what Cyprus would be like if reunified in the future... How would the Govt react to any surviving paramilitary groups? Would we have tough politicians or lame ducks? Would we be like other states? Or would we still be arguing about our Greek / Turkishness?
Do you think this could be a probable news headline? Check it out...
Paramilitary gunmen shot dead in CSS ambush
Cypriot Secret Service (CSS) Agents involved in an undercover operation in Cyprus have shot dead two EOKA-C and two TMT-B gunmen and injured a third man who escaped. He is being sought by police following the incident which took place a few miles from Dhali.
No Cypriot National soldiers are believed to have been injured during the attack.
They were local men believed to be in their early twenties and who were known to be members of the paramilitary groups.
It is understood the CSS patrol, which has been operating in the area, came across the four gunmen who were both armed.
One is understood to have been holding an Armalite rifle and the other a shotgun.
The soldiers challenged both men and when they did not respond the patrol opened fire, killing the two men.
A third man escaped in a car and the soldiers believe they shot the driver.
The vehicle was later found abandoned a few miles away with blood stains on the seats.
It is not known if the CSS were lying in wait for the men but there has been increased covert activity by the security forces since the murder of three Cypriot students.
Separatist gunmen had opened fire on student gathering in Nicosia last month.
Cypriot Interior Minister Lady Elena Bozkurt Sharbel Richardson refused on comment on the incident but said: "Nobody has a right to divide the Cypriot nation. The unity of this nation is indivisible and the Cypriot national security forces reserve the right to respond to any external as well as internal threats to her security."
