Cypriot victims in serious condition
By John Leonidou
TWO Cypriots are still in a serious condition at the Royal London hospital after being caught up in Thursday’s terrorist attacks on the British capital.
Philip Patsalos, 53, has had one leg amputated and could still lose another, while the condition of 19-year-old Danielle Kolias, who lives in Edmonton with her father, is also said to be serious.
The condition of doctor Philip Patsalos is said by his wife Eleftheria to be serious but non-life threatening. Speaking to London Greek Radio, she said:
“Although he is in a stable condition, doctors had to amputate his left leg from the knee down and they are now trying their best to save his right leg. They told us that the next 48 hours will be crucial and the doctors are trying to control the blood flow in his leg. Although he is intensive care his condition is said by doctors not to be life threatening so that’s good.
“He is still under the anesthetic and will not be allowed to wake until tomorrow. He works at two different hospitals and he was on his way to one of them where he works there three times a week.”
Upon hearing the news of Patsalos’ injury, his closes relative in Cyprus, Xeni Xenophontos from Aradhippou, immediately flew to England where she joined Eleftheria and the couple’s two children, Maria and Nicolas.
Also flying out to London was Patsalos’ cousin Michalis Gavriel Constantinou, who told reporters that he had been trying all day to reach him until he had received that fateful telephone call early in the evening in which another relative informed him of what happened.
Patsalos, who is originally from Lefkara, had a house in Larnaca and had been looking forward to coming to Cyprus on August 19 to see his family. He works at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy at the Institute of Neurology in London, and is reported to be in the same hospital as Danielle Kolias.
Doctors have stated that 19-year-old Kolias is also in a serious condition. Kolias was on the Picadilly Line train that blew up at King’s Cross.
Cyprus High Commissioner in London, Petros Eftychiou, said that the situation was very trying for the victims and their families.
“The two injured Cypriots are currently with their families right now and all their relatives are standing by their sides at this very difficult moment. As far as their conditions are concerned it is far too early to determine if they are out of danger or not.”
He added that they were the only Cypriot casualties at this time but did add that the Cypriot High Commission was on full alert to contact any families if more Cypriots turn up in the fatality or casualty lists.
“At this moment these two are the only Cypriot casualties; however, we are in constant contact with all the relative authorities while we also have 24-hour lines open all the time so we are prepared if any further Cypriot casualties are reported to us.
“Our lines had received lots of calls from Cyprus asking for their loved ones, relatives and friends and we have responded to them.”
Reports last night said a third Cypriot, named as Stella Lycourgou, had been lightly injured in one of the blasts and released from hospital.
