Seeking information before openning a shop

Postby HannaSh » Tue Sep 22, 2009 6:53 pm

Hallo,
I want to open a shop selling cool designed jeans and tops for young women ages 16-25. Prices: jeans 35-40 euro, tops 15-18 euro.

I will appriciate some information regarding:
*where is the best potential market, Larnaca or Limassol or a nother city?
*is this prices range reasonable?
*do they prefer brands or not?
*do they buy new cloth often?
*are they open to new styles?
*do tourists spend on clothing as well?

I thank you for any information you can give me.

Limassol is bigger so the market is bigger. But there are many places that sell such things for those ages.

I know a little about selling jeans in Cyprus. I imported three top brands in the early 90s. Prices were not cheap and over the past 5 years have increased by 35%. Yes there was a market and we still sell but on a much smaller scale (competition).
We now import the jeans unfinished and have them finished in Cyprus under license, and so do a few others.
In short give it a go but it's not easy, there will be huge competition especially at the lower end of the market, especially from the brand names.

purdey, thank you for the information it's very helpful. I imagined that there is competition. The question is can i still make decent earnings. Are you able to tell me if such a shop can sell about 14000 euro per month?

I'll appreciate your answer and other information you can give me.

best regards

Hannah, only a fool would tell say you can make that much money from scratch. You need to factor the price you pay per unit, add on rent, utilities, taxes, marketing and then work out how many units you need to sell to make a living.
My advise would be, take out a short lease (6 months) market the product heavilly, maybe 'buy 1 get one free' for a start and then see how it goes.
There will always be a market for denim but your price and brand will be crucial. I do not see many others in this trade making large profits even in the first year of trading. Give it a go if you can afford it, I wish you luck.
