GREEK CYPRIOTS ARE ALSO FED UP!
Southern Cypriot Politis Daily published an article on a public survey carried out by “Noverna Consulting and Resarch” between April 18th and 30th in which 500 people were interviewed. The Daily had the poll ask “if there was a solution and security fully established” followed by other questions, the proportion of positive answers given to each are as follows:
1. Would you accept a family member marry a Turkish Cypriot?
2003: 24%, 2007; 11% and 2008; 31%.
2. Would you accept working in the same place as a Turkish Cypriot?
2003; 82%, 2007; 63% and 2008; 85%
3. Would you accept living in mixed cities or villages?
2003; 74%, 2007: 63% and 2008; 83%
4. Would you accept living under the rule of the Turkish Cypriots in the North?
2003; 13%, 2007; 5% and 2008; 21%
5. Would you work for a Turkish Cypriot employer?
2003; Not asked. 2007; 28% and 2008: 47%.
6. Would you accept having your kid go to the same school with Turkish Cypriots?
2003: Not asked. 2007: 54% and 2008: 88%
7. Would you go to the same entertainment venues as Turkish Cypriots?
2003; 72%. 2007; 62% and 2008; 82%.
The paper says that Greek Cypriots asked regarding getting compensation for their immovables answered mostly positively with 46% saying “yes”, 39% saying “no” and 15% saying they didn’t know. Again according to the poll, 53% of Greek Cypriot immigrants said “yes” and 38% said “no.” In comparison, those who did not have to immigrate voted 42% “yes” and 39% “no.”
Politis Daily points out that those Greek Cypriot immigrants wishing to live under the rule of Turkish Cypriots is at 29% and those who don’t is at 63%. 8% said they didn’t know. In response to the question “Is there anything that worries you when it comes to the solution of the Cyprus issue?” 47% voted “yes”, 44% voted “no” and 9% didn’t know. The most important cause for concern according to the daily, with 9% are those Northern Cypriots who are of Turkish origin.
Other causes for concern according to the daily are 9% with “living with Turkish Cypriots”, 8% with “Turkey’s guarantor and interference right” 6% with “economy and society” 5% with security, 5% with “permanence of Turkish troops on the Island” and 11% with “other concerns.”
The paper asked the people who attended the poll whether they believed that “Turkey would try to invade independent locations” to which 71% - a great majority – replied “no.”
21% said they thought this was possible and 8% said they didn’t know. The daily also mentions how many people visited Northern Cyprus after the gates opened, and according to this 60% of the people went to Northern Cyprus after the gates opened and 40% didn’t. 46% went to Northern Cyprus once, 27% twice, 19% between 3 or 9 times and 8% more than 10 times.
Looking at these results, we can see clearly that the Greek Cypriot electorate fired Tassos Papadopoulos from Presidency. Greek Cypriots are tired of the “barbarian Turks, poor Greek Cypriots” tale that they have been fed for years now. Greek Cypriots do not want to live by the rule of the church and decisions of closed-door meetings.
It is obvious that the opening of the border gates has caused a great change in the attitude of the Greek Cypriots. For this reason, the peaceful and active policies the Turkish side has been pursuing might have really paid off.
However, in this panorama, there is also cause for concern. Even though the research shows that there is a community in the south looking for peace, the same community voted first Papadopulos and then Christofias into power. Even if one can think that the Greek Cypriot voters voted for Christofias for peace, -which international commentaries point out- it is hard to understand on what Christofias has been basing his non-peaceful attitude lately.
As can be seen,
In Southern Cyprus, democracy and voters on the one hand
And the Church and Greek Cypriot National Council on the other!
