Turkish Cypriot businessman argues that the breakaway regime does not want the Green Line Regulation to operate

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (19.09.09) reports that the Turkish Cypriot businessman named Unsal Ozbilenler has announced that between the period 9 January 2009 – 26 June 2009 he sold to the government controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus potatoes the worth of which was 1.016.505 Turkish liras. He said that because of difficulties he is facing he is forced to freeze all the activities of his company.

Mr Ozbilenler argued that the self-styled Trade Department of the “ministry of agriculture” has violated the permit granted to him to import potatoes and added that he is preparing to file charges against this “department”.

Mr Ozbilenler said that he took back to the occupied areas a part of the potatoes he wanted to sell in the government controlled areas of the Republic and tried to sell them there, but he was not permitted to do so.

Mr Ozbilenler accused the self-styled ministry of not wanting the Green Line Regulation of the EU to operate and added that big profit is secured from the sales, but they are prevented. He said that he was forced to compete with the “state” on the issue of importing potato seed. He added that he cannot compete with the “state” and that is why he will stop his activities.

The paper notes that a merchant, who did not wish for his name to be revealed, said that the allegations of Mr Ozbilenler that a local merchant brought potatoes to the occupied part of Cyprus to sell them to the occupation army and that he sold them to the supermarkets were not true.

On the other hand, the self-styled ministry of agriculture confirmed that it had granted permit to a merchant to bring potatoes to the occupied areas of Cyprus in order to sell them to the army, but added that these potatoes have not yet come to the occupied areas.

I compared Lit's propaganda with the original article published by Kıbrıs gazetesi... as it was expected, Lit's propaganda article is a total twisted version of the original article.

Now i dont read Turkish, but your link points to an article thats dated "17 Eylül 2009"...thats September 17, 2009. The Republic of Cyprus, Ministry of Interior, Press and Information Office website is talking about a Kibris newspaper article thats dated 19.09.09...thats September 19, 2009.

What are you upset about, Insan? I am just reproducing what the TC press is stating and i obtain that info from the PIO. Here let me show you something. Talat recently talked with the Oram's lawyers. The illegal bayrak covered that particular story here:

http://www.brtk.cc/index.php/lang/en/cat/2/news/55247

PIO mentioned the Bayrak article here...news item numbered 3:

http://www.moi.gov.cy/moi/pio/pio.nsf/A ... enDocument

See? No propaganda from the Press and information office.

I would agree with you there. The version provided by the RoC Ministry of Interior Press and Information Office is obviously a garbled version of the above article. I can find no report into this issue in the Kıbrıs newspaper on 19.09.2009. The problem here may just be poor translation rather an attempt to deceive. The facts of the story are simply that a businessman bought some potatoes in the north to sell in the south, physically transported them to the south and now, for some reason, wishes to bring the potatoes back to the north. He has been refused permission to do this on the grounds that, since there is no shortage of potatoes in the north, they are not giving import licences for potatoes. This businessman is up in arms because somebody else has recently been given permission to import some potatoes. This is hardly earth-shattering stuff.

It is interesting that the Press and Information Office does not think it important to convey the statement made by Potato Producers Union Chair Ahmet Yeşilada that this businessman has not yet paid the producers for these potatoes, and that in his opinion he should not be permitted to reimport them until he does so.

The moral of the story is that, while the Press and Information Office's digest of the Turkish Cypriot press is an interesting source, it is not 100% reliable and it is always good idea to corraborate things before accepting it as gospel truth.

Really, you are surprised by the actions of the RoC propaganda machine?
It is not for some reason Tim, it's because GCs ae not buying potatoes from a TC. Surprise Surprise as Cilla would say, now where have I heard that before?
