Ah mahalebee! Lovely refreshing stuff, all soft and melt in the mouth and with that delightful rose cordial.

I remember one visit to central Nicosia back in the late '70s there was an old boy selling the stuff on the pavement, from the back of a push-bike I seem to recall.

Don't see that anymore, do you? (???)

Yes u do ........ If u goto SarayOnu in old nicosia next to post office (at North) u can test it .

Halil there is an old man called Suleyman from Aysozomeno trades in front of Kapali charshi just beyond where you have your meetings. Have you ever tasted his mahallebi?

yes i did ,
he is not around anymore ? I hope he is in life .

Well it might explain halil's (subliminal) lust for this dish.

My mum's version, made with rhodhostamo, was always white ....

On the contrary, as I have told you before, that old woman (my idol) is more like me than my mother

Idolatry is back. And, if I had to choose a Turkish idol ... you might be considered.

I suppose there's nothing coloured red and white in so-called free areas of Cyprus and Greece because of very well known reasons.
