Ozgurgun alleges that occupied Varosha is a part of the illegal regime and urges that the issue can only be resolved within talks
Illegal Bayrak television (16.09.09) broadcast the following:
“Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun has said that the Greek Cypriot side -which had prevented the solution of the Cyprus problem by repeatedly rejecting the UN solution plans- is now delaying the realization of the same objective by slowing down the Cyprus negotiation process.
In a statement today, the Foreign Minister criticized the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias for his recent statements, in which he claimed that the city of Maras [occupied Varosha] was under occupation and promised to settle the issue with initiatives to be launched away from the negotiation table.
Stressing that the Greek Cypriot leader’s initiatives would end in failure, he said that 'if one is to speak about an occupation in Cyprus, it is the occupation of the 1960 partnership state by the Greek Cypriot side through the force of arms'.
On the issue of Maras, the Foreign Minister stressed that the city is within the territory of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and that it falls under the sovereign authority of the TRNC. He reminded that the issue of Maras is a component of the Cyprus question which can only be solved through negotiations between the two sides at the table.
The Minister complained that the Greek Cypriot side has been using its international recognition and unilateral EU membership against the TRNC and Turkey to bring solutions to issues -which are components of the Cyprus problem- away from the negotiation table.
'The Greek Cypriot Administration are making demands that will lower the status of the Cyprus Turkish people to that of a minority in their own state, will lead to the displacement of many people and will inhumanely force some of our citizens who have been living with us for the past 30 year and become part of our people to leave the island', he said.
The Minister noted that the unacceptable demands being raised by the Greek Cypriot leader will make it impossible to reach an agreement.
He repeated that the Turkish side is still committed to the objecting of finding a settlement to the Cyprus problem on the basis of an undiluted bi-zonal order, political equality of the two peoples, equal status of founding states and the continuation of Turkey’s position as a guarantor power”.
