Technical questions

Postby Svetlana » Thu Sep 17, 2009 11:31 am

This question will prove just how little I really understand about computers!

I understand a 64 bit O/S allows you to address a larger memory and also to move larger amounts of data, can you specify a 64 bit O/S on any laptop. Are there any disadvantages?

Is leopard O/S 64bit? Any other thoughts on 64 v 32 bit systems?

I need a new laptop and am not sure whether to go the MAC route.

And finally, someone was telling me about their friends, in Cyprus, attaching a 'dongle' with an aerial to their laptops for internet access, which did not require wifi? It was all a bit vague, but what are they talking about?

64bit O/Ses need 64bit drivers and (preferably) 64bit applications to accompany them. Since there's a lack of both, and the speed gain is not so great, I wouldn't recommend a 64bit OS (yet).

If by "did not require wifi" you mean it did not require an internet connection, then they were most probably talking about wimax gear which allows you to connect to distant but free (or password free) networks with internet access. Of course, conventional wifi hardware is enough if you're just stealing bandwidth from the neighbor :)

Hi Svetlana,

If u tell us for what purposes u will use ur laptopi then me and some other may help u decide whether to choose a 64 bit or 32 bit os; windows or mac based.

As for the "dongle" internet, it is called 3g internet in Northern Cyprus and has very good, satisfactory performance especially after midnight. :)

I had a vista 32 on my laptop but installed Windows 7-64 bit and its way faster than the Vista 32 bit OS. Programs arent an issue for me. On my C drive i see two program folders. When i install a 64 bit program, it installs in the folder called Program files(64). I am also able to use 32 bit software in Windows 7 and it installs them in the other programs folder. Again, its a lot quicker and windows 7 (64) was able to find all my drivers with the exception of one. so i had to manually add that driver. No biggie.

Now I am in trouble, the experts disagree LOL!

OK, does wimax require a subscription? I was told this dongle required only a one off payment of €50; I understand it was pretty slow.

As to what will I use my laptop for:

I make huge use of the interweb, several hours a day, so I want a large clear, screen. Otherwise, mainly word processing/mail/photos etc. But no GAMES!!!!

However, two other factors:
i) cost is not a major issue; my current laptop, nearly 6 years old, cost around €2500 back then!
ii) I want it to be future proofed and I do not want downloads to be slow; thus large memory, big CPU and disc, wifi essential (not available on all Sonys!!) HD screen.

Emotionally, I feel a MAC is a purist option, it also seems more mainstream than years gone by.

HTH
