If you buy a Windows machine (Vi$ta) it is very easy... in fact, I have an EZ Transfer cable that will help you. Just connect the two systems together and most of it is done for you...

Only after you confirm to Vista 300 times that this is what you want to do!

If this is a Windows to Windows transfer…

1. If you don’t already have one, go to a computer shop and purchase a 2m “Cat-5 Crossover” cable. It looks just like the one you connect to the Internet, with one slight difference your eyes won’t notice.

2. Place the two laptops side by side and turn them on. When Windows settles down, connect each side of the Crossover cable to the network port (Internet port) of each laptop until Windows announces that there’s a network established between them. Use your file manager to see if the laptops see each other’s hard disks.

3. Now go to Outlook of the new laptop and do this… (in version 2003)

File > Import and Export > Import Internet Mail Account Settings

And then...

File > Import and Export > Import Internet Mail and Addresses

4. If you were able to see your files earlier in step 2 then just copy and paste across the hard disks!

Hi GR

No, it will be ZP to Vista :-(

Question: just checking my ancient but all powerful desktop; when I click on: Settings>System>Processors there are four XEON 3.06Ghz processors listed, but I am sure it only has a dual core CPU; how do I check, please?

More news on new laptop, shortly - I really am grateful for everone's advice.

I’ve never heard of “ZP”! :? If you meant "XP" then my instructions above should still work.

If you look at the motherboard, the processor/s has/have an aluminium heat-sink and fan on top of them to keep them cool, so they are easy to find.

OK, does wimax require a subscription? I was told this dongle required only a one off payment of €50; I understand it was pretty slow.

As to what will I use my laptop for:

I make huge use of the interweb, several hours a day, so I want a large clear, screen. Otherwise, mainly word processing/mail/photos etc. But no GAMES!!!!

However, two other factors:
i) cost is not a major issue; my current laptop, nearly 6 years old, cost around €2500 back then!
ii) I want it to be future proofed and I do not want downloads to be slow; thus large memory, big CPU and disc, wifi essential (not available on all Sonys!!) HD screen.

Emotionally, I feel a MAC is a purist option, it also seems more mainstream than years gone by.

HTH

Go Mac - with Leopard and BootCamp you can run MacOSX or Windows (keep the installation disks you used for your old laptop). Wireless N WIFI built in. HD screen. Out of the box it will have all the software you need for the above.

Get a 3G dongle from MTN, vodafone or any of the others and your off.

I own and use both Macs and PC's. Prefer the Mac any day.

GR, I landed here thinking I was arriving in Tunisia; thought it was strange when I didn't see any camels - and I did ask you about those funny road markings on the outskirts of Nicosia....so maybe I am on the island.

Anyway, I have ordered my laptop and I am NOT going t tell you about it, so there...!

In a huff.
