OK, does wimax require a subscription? I was told this dongle required only a one off payment of €50; I understand it was pretty slow.

As to what will I use my laptop for:

I make huge use of the interweb, several hours a day, so I want a large clear, screen. Otherwise, mainly word processing/mail/photos etc. But no GAMES!!!!

However, two other factors:
i) cost is not a major issue; my current laptop, nearly 6 years old, cost around €2500 back then!
ii) I want it to be future proofed and I do not want downloads to be slow; thus large memory, big CPU and disc, wifi essential (not available on all Sonys!!) HD screen.

Emotionally, I feel a MAC is a purist option, it also seems more mainstream than years gone by.

So, u don't need a high-end laptop, Svetalana. Any mid-ranged laptop with 4gb of ram, a decent cpu, a good graphics card and blue ray support with an 32 bit os(recommended) would be suitable for u.

As for Mac os; u need to be familiar with it and at least have some friends who r experienced mac os users in case u face some little problems, urgently need to be solved; u could ask their assistance.

U can get more info abt 3g broadband by following the link below.

On a computer that has 4 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM), the System Properties dialog box and the System Information dialog box may report less memory than you expect.

This problem occurs in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2003, and in Windows Server 2008.

Important Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) made changes to the way components of the user interface (UI) report memory. For example, some components of the Windows Vista SP1 UI will now report when there is 4 GB or more of total physical memory that is installed on the computer. For more information about how memory is reported in Windows Vista Service Pack 1, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
946003 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946003/ ) Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will report 4 GB of system memory (RAM) on systems that have 4 GB of memory installed

Lana,

Unless you are technical, any mid-range laptop will do you.

Most of the complicated stuff is just about who has a bigger "dick"!

I could be wrong as I only have 35 years experience in the business.

64bit isn’t necessarily faster. It simply means that the processor’s registers can handle 64bit instructions if requested by a 64bit software program.

In fact, an 8bit operation (addition/subtraction/multiplications/etc) is bound to complete faster than a similar 64bit operation quite simply because there is far less data to load/unload in and out of registers while operating on it.

Furthermore, most instructions sent to a processor are far smaller than 64bits so they must first get converted to 64bits in a 64bit environment, before they can be operated on thus wasting more time.

ie: if you click your mouse that’s a “word” sized instruction (a value of 0…65534 odd) not 64bit, so all mouse activity (as an example of wasted time) must be converted to 64bit size to properly occupy 64bit registers!

In a nutshell, 64bit instruction processing has its advantageous use in larger and more complex calculations but definitely not on Lana’s desk while browsing the CF or using Ms Office!

Lana, if you’re still awake… you don’t need a 64bit environment, and if you had one your computing needs would never take advantage of it anyway.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed. When I first heard about 32 bit and 64 bit computers, I looked inside mine and could only count 17 bits, which was why I was worried.
