In an effort to strengthen their influence in Washington, the Turkish lobby (organizations: Turkish Coalition of America and TCA Turkish Cultural Foundation TCF) held a few days ago an official event, a dinner in honor of President of the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican John Bonner . Presented by the Turks as "historic" event that was the first ever official meeting between the Turkish-American community and the leadership of Congress.

Indeed, according to the TCA, this dinner (which attended, among others, Ileana Ros-Letinen, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Muhtar Kent, president of Coca-Cola) demonstrates that Congress recognizes the practical 'increasingly important role "of the Turks in the U.S..

Back in Turkey, the U.S. ambassador Francis Ritsarntone (again) infuriated the government when Erdogan (re) expressed concern regarding the freedom of the press in the country. Immediate was the response of the AKP, which called him (for the second time in two months) not to interfere in the internal affairs of Turkey.

"President of the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican John Bonner "

There is no such title nor name in Congress. The title is Speaker of the House, and the person who holds this office is John Boehner. Skafidas needs remedial instruction in Journalism 101.

It would have sounded more impressive and important had Skafidas said that John Boehner is third in line for the Presidency.!

"End of an era" for the Internet in Turkey

The restrictions on Internet access that will apply from August 22, Turkey, declared the "end of the era of the Internet.

The new system establishes four "filters" and it is mandatory to choose one of them, by all users.

The bypass or attempt to circumvent these filters would constitute a criminal offense. Until today, when Turkey imposed a ban on access to certain websites, like YouTube, users had to access by, any settings such as changing the DNS. After August 22, will be prohibited.

Under the new rules require the servers to allow Internet access only to "customers" with a specific username and password. Which means to say that we continuously recorded the websites visited every Turk.

Cyprus National Guard funerals turn political

No signs of the outrage and fury abating in Cyprus following the deaths of 13 National Guardsmen and firefighters on Monday after the confiscated Syro-Iranian arms cache stored on Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari blew after a brushfire. The anger is aimed at the island’s communist president who, it appears, rather than trust the weapons to German, American or British authorities to dispose of, true to his ‘anti-imperialist’ worldview, preferred not to offend Syria and Iran – leaders in the anti-Western camp, to which Demetris Christofias innately believes Cyprus belongs – and dumped the problem on the National Guard, which repeatedly told its political masters since the weapons were seized in 2009 that the resources provided to it to safely handle the deadly cargo were inadequate.

The anger with the Christofias’ government has taken on a patriotic tone, with Cypriot public opinion seemingly fed up with Christofias’ undermining of the National Guard – which all Cypriot males devote at least two years of their lives to; his indifference to the practical defence of Cyprus; the antiquated ideological motives that inspired him to put relations with Iran and Syria over the advice and safety of National Guard servicemen – the National Guard being, for Christofias and his ilk, a bastion of Hellenism on the island, a reminder of the island’s armed national struggles, which Christofias regards as rooted in ’nationalism’ and ‘chauvinism’; and his constant attacks on Greece’s influence in Cyprus and chipping away at Cypriots’ Greekness, their attachment to Greece and to Hellenism. Thus, the funerals of the fallen had a political character, with strong condemnations of the criminal negligence and incompetence of the Christofias’ government contrasted with the self-sacrifice and dutiful patriotism of the dead, with the son of the Cyprus Navy Chief Andreas Ioannides giving in his funeral oration a stirring defence of Cypriot Hellenism, those who believe in it, serve it and defend it.

Above is Tuesday night’s RIK news report on the funerals of the two most senior officers killed in the conflagration, Captain Andreas Ioannides, commander of the Navy, and Commander Lambros Lambrou, commander of the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base. Ioannides was from Yialousa, the occupied Greek village in the Karpasia peninsula, and Lambrou was from Yialousa’s satellite village of Agia Triada.

New low for Greek TV

Image

The Cyprus Action Network of America has been in the forefront of a campaign against one of Greece's main private TV stations, ANT1, for its showing of the Turkish soap Ezel, which is set in Turkish-occupied Cyprus, in Kyrenia to be exact.

You should visit the CANA site to find out who to phone and write to in Greece to protest ANT1’s shameless promotion of the Turkish occupation of Cyprus and its impudent dismissal of complaints from Cypriot refugee associations, Cypriot students and other supporters of Cypriot Hellenism’s fight against Turkish fascism. It really does beggar belief that such a prominent Greek TV station could stoop so low, to be so lacking in national solidarity and national dignity; and it is just as shocking that it has been left to Cypriots and diaspora activists to expose ANT1’s outrageous behaviour and that media in Greece appear indifferent to the issue.

Also, defencegreece.com is an English-language website dedicated to news about Greek-related defence and geopolitical issues, which is worth a look.

I thoroughly agree with the sentiments of this post: it is just another example of Greek interests dumping on the Kypreos big-time.

Violation of Cypriot airspace by Turkish fighter jets
Friday, September 23, 2011

Two Turkish F-16 fighter jets apparently violated Cypriot air space and almost clashed with a Cyprus Airways plane - type CY346 - which was on flight to London while it was gaining altitude after taking off from Larnaca airport.

An official from Cyprus Airways clarified that the crew of the aircraft gained visual contact with the Turkish fighters, after it had received a notice from air traffic controllers. No injuries or further harassment was reported.

Press reports said that the Turkish fighters were obviously flying illegally in Cypriot airspace and that authorities at the Civil Aviation service are well aware of this problem.

Finally a report in the Fileleftheros newspaper said that Turkish air fighters have over the last few days been constantly violating the reserved area LCD3 around the British Base of Akrotiri.

It seems that the provocations have no end.

It looks like Turkey is leading Greece and Cyprus into war. The crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean is escalating as we speak. Just a short while ago the following announcement was broadcasted by Turkish authorities: Areas designated as Turkish territorial waters, but that have been proclaimed as an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) by the Greek Cypriot administration, will hear after begin being patrolled by the Turkish fleet… namely the southern part of Cyprus!

According to a report on proinikordela, the " Piri Reis" surveyor and the "Chocolate Mehmet Pasa" and "Ontzou" have left the naval port of Marmaris in the Eastern Mediterranean and Turkish officials have warned that they will be in close "view from Paphos' since they will only be six miles from the Greek Cypriot side!

Parallel to this, the Norwegian surveyor Veritas is to arrive in Anatolia and begin seismic surveys, following by the company with the Turkish Ministry of Energy. According to reports the company has no reservations about surveys south of Cyprus!

In response to this, Cyprus is apparently moving defence missiles MM-40 Exocet II in designated areas.

Meanwhile a separate report on defencenet just said that at 17.20 the Piri Reis was located between the Greek island of Oinousses and the Turkish coast. It is travelling south at a speed of some 7,8 knots. The photo above proves this, since hellasfrappe snapped it from onalert which is another military news agency.

BREAKING NEWS - Turkey war ships near Paphos, Russian sub on the way

Saturday, September 24, 2011

Cyprus is experiencing some of the most horrific moments in its modern history since its northern section was invaded by Turkey in 1974. The latest word in the Eastern Mediterranean is not that good. Turkey has stepped up on its threats and has sent even more warships within a breath’s view of Paphos.

A report on proinikordela said that Russian support is on the way. Luckily a Russian submarine armed with missiles has been dispatched to the area from Moscow. In a similar story several days ago on defencenet it was noted that Russia was going to send a conventional submarine, but it has yet to be confirmed whether or not they sent a conventional or nuclear type.
Meanwhile, Ankara triggered by the discovery of oil deposits near Prinos Thassos, has now set its sights on the Northern Aegean and is turning up the tension even more by raising the issue over territorial claims in Greece’s EEZ. An article on defencenet confirmed this claiming that Ankara has hired a new research vessel (Italian flag on a ship called URANIA) to scan the northern Aegean, in the Gulf of Saros or Xirou, on the outskirts of Thrace.

Tensions over the continental shelf were particularly high during the mid-1970s and again the late 1980s, when Turkey conducted exploratory oceanographic research missions in parts of this specific area. These were perceived as a dangerous provocation by Greece, which led to a build up of mutual military threats in 1976 and again in 1987

It must be reiterated that the islets of Zourafa and Laksodera which have over the past 130 years been exuming oil are located only 5.82 nautical miles from Samothraki and approximately 14 miles from the Turkish coast. They are two of the 130 islets that Turkey now disputes that belong to Greece. Other Turkish claims, or "grey zones". of undetermined sovereignty over a number of small islets, most notably the islets of Imia.

The dispute between Turkey and Greece is to what degree the Greek islands off the Turkish coast should be taken into account for determining the Greek and Turkish economic zones. Turkey argues that the notion of "continental shelf", by its very definition, implies that distances should be measured from the continental mainland, claiming that the sea-bed of the Aegean geographically forms a natural prolongation of the Anatolian land mass. This would mean for Turkey to be entitled to economic zones up to the median line of the Aegean (leaving out, of course, the territorial waters around the Greek islands in its eastern half, which would remain as Greek exclaves.) Greece, on the other hand, claims that all islands must be taken into account on an equal basis. This would mean that Greece would gain the economic rights to almost the whole of the Aegean.

In this matter, Greece has the UN Law of the Sea on its side, although the Convention restricts the application of this rule to islands of a notable size, as opposed to small uninhabitable islets and rocks. The precise delimitation of the economic zones is the only one of all the Aegean issues where Greece has officially acknowledged that Turkey has legitimate interests that might require some international process of arbitration or compromise between the two sides.

Ankara earlier in the day issued a NAVTEX for the conduction of exploration by the Norwegian research vessel 'Bergen Surveyor' and accompanying vessels from September 15 to November 15 in an area that also overlaps with the Greek continental shelf south of the island of Kastelorizo, as delineated under the Law of the Sea.

At the same time, instructions were also given to the Greek Embassy in Oslo to contact the shipowning company of the research vessel, and the Norwegian foreign ministry to inform it of the Greek positions.

The M/V Bergen Surveyor is owned by Wavefield Inseis ASA, a Norwegian marine geophysical company that provides exploration and other related services that has been acquired by CGGSVeritas.

Turkey early Friday issued a NAVTEX advising of "Seismic survey by M/V Bergen Surveyor, M/V Sharona, M/V Glomar Venture and Thor Beamer between 15 Sept-15 Nov".
