Eroglu:TRNC second Turkish state to be established

Postby Lit » Mon Sep 14, 2009 2:05 pm

illegal Bayrak television (13.09.09) reports the following:

“Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu arrives in the republic after completing his contacts in the Turkish city of Nigde. As part of his contacts Mr Eroglu attended the inauguration ceremony of a park named after him in Nigde.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Prime Minister said that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was the second Turkish state to be established in the world and the Cyprus Turkish people were determined to maintain the existence of the TRNC. Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu expressed his gratitude to Turkey’s unconditional support to the TRNC. Pointing out that the Cyprus Turkish people had achieved freedom with the 1974 peace operation; the Premier said that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will continue to exist with the support of motherland Turkey.”

This is a very literal rendering of 'Kıbrıs Türk insanı' and would be better expressed as the 'Turkish Cypriot people' or 'the Turkish people of Cyprus'.

I am not having a go at your translation Tim, but I thought the real TC's were not keen on this nomenclature!

OK, with you now. In this grammatical structure, it is unclear whether 'Turkish Cypriots' or 'Turks of Cyprus' is being used.

Be it a "real TC" or an "unreal TC"(Who r they?). TCs r TCs... It is a well known fact that ovverwhelming majority of TCs consider themselves belonging to Turkish nation... Therefore, calling ourselves or being called as Turkish Cypriot, Cypriot Turk, Turks of Cyprus, Cyprus Turks r not something new to our ears and there's no need to be keen on those nomenclature. We and foreigners have been using such nomenclatures since 1920s... There's nothing irrational caaling ourselves or being called with any of the above nomenclature. If we called us as "Turkiyeli" or being called as "Turkiyeli"(Citizen of Turkey); then it would be irrational.

How do GCs were calling TCs throughout the past decades? Same as above mentioned nomenclatures. Right.

On the otherhand, TCs and Turks of Turkey have never called GCs how GCs and and foreigners call. TCs and Turks have always called GCs as Rums of Cyprus, Cyprus Rums, Rum Cypriots, Cypriot Rums. Completely with the same terminology how TCs and Turks of Turkey call TCs.

Would this "belonging to the Turkish nation" statement indicate that you would rather have annexation of TRNC to Turkey? Being kindred to Turkey is one thing, but annexation by Turkey would be IMHO more harmful in the long run.

No, it does not indicate that... it only indicates our ancestral ties... as for would annexation of TRNC to Turkey be harmful; it depends on many factors. Why do u think it would be harmful?

Because Turkish Cypriots by and large are more European in outlook than Mainland Turks, particularly those from Anatolia. IMHO annexation will lead to large-scale Anatolian immigration, thus eventually overwhelming the Turkish Cypriot identity.
