Patriot Missiles Offered to Turkey in $7.8 Billion Arms Deal

By Tony Capaccio

Sept. 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Pentagon has notified Congress it plans to sell Turkey the most advanced version of its Patriot air-defense missile in an arms package worth as much as $7.8 billion, according to a press release.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the deal for nearly 290 Patriot missiles includes 72 PAC-3 models along with communications gear needed to establish an integrated air- defense system for more than a dozen command posts, according to the release dated Sept. 9 and posted to its Web site yesterday.

Congress has 30 days to veto the agreement before it’s considered approved. Lockheed Martin Corp., based in Bethesda, Maryland, and Waltham, Massachusetts-based Raytheon Co. would then enter into talks for a potential contract with Turkey.

“Turkey will use the PAC-3 missiles to improve its missile defense capability, strengthen its homeland defense, and deter regional threats,” the agency said in the statement.

Turkey has not previously acquired PAC-3 missiles, “but will be able to absorb and effectively utilize these missiles,” it said.

The PAC-3, introduced in 2001, is the most advanced model of the Patriot missile. It is more effective than prior versions because it destroys incoming missiles by collision. Earlier Patriots exploded in the path of an enemy weapon.

The U.S. has already sold the missile to the Netherlands, Germany and Japan. Lockheed Martin also received a $774 million contract in December to sell PAC-3s to the United Arab Emirates and U.S. Army.

Boeing Co. is also a subcontractor.

Turkey seeks to buy C-27Js or C-295s

15:46 14-09-2009

With deliveries of its first Airbus Military A400Ms having slipped from December 2009 until early 2013, Turkey has announced plans to acquire an interim capability including 10 tactical transportsm Flightglobal reported.

Turkey’s undersecretariat for defence industries, the SSM, plans to start a project shortly, with a selection to be made by mid-2010 between the Airbus Military C-295 and Alenia Aeronautica’s C-27J Spartan.

The Turkish air force operates 13 Lockheed Martin C-130B/Es, 50 Airbus Military CN-235s and has an active fleet of fewer than 20 C160 Transalls. The service is to receive 10 A400Ms.

The SSM has also outlined a new air force requirement for a stand-off jammer capability. Five aircraft are required, with Ankara considering a business/regional jet conversion involving types such as the Bombardier Global Express and Embraer ERJ-145. Turkey had previously considered adapting the A400M for the role. MILAZ

U.S. missiles cost US$1 bil., says Turkey military official

ISTANBUL -- A possible purchase of Patriot missiles from the United States would cost US$1 billion, not a previously quoted figure of US$7.8 billion, Turkey's military said in its weekly briefing, broadcaster CNN Turk reported on Friday.

The U.S. administration has notified Congress of a possible sale of Patriot PAC-3 anti-missile batteries and related gear to Turkey, the only NATO ally bordering Iran.

“The price of the missiles system has been put at US$7.8 billion, but the real price is US$1 billion, and this has a pay-back period of six years,” the broadcaster said, quoting a military spokesman at a weekly military briefing.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Friday the possible missile sale to Turkey was not in response to a threat from neighbours but part of a drive to modernise the country's armed forces. Turkey has good relations with Iran, a country the United States sees as a possible threat. Turkey also shares land borders with Georgia, Bulgaria, Greece, Iraq and Syria.

“We see zero threat from our neighbours, this is more of an internal issue of the military,” said Davutoglu in an interview with CNN Turk on Friday.

The sale to Turkey would include 13 Patriot “fire units”, 72 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missiles and a range of associated hardware for ground-based air defence, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a notice made public last week.

Who is panicking? Defense weapons are ok, maybe Cyprus can get the s400s. Remember, its for defensive purposes only.

If you take a look at the first article, you will see that it states the possible sale of these weapons would cost the Turkish State billions. The third article corrects the first article where it states that the possible purchase of the missiles would cost $1 billion by the Turkish state and not the previously quoted figure of $7.8 billion. You see? I was just updating the original article to more accurately reflect the facts.
