The University of Cyprus should undertake this research as it will contradict our distorted history books.

The percentage from Phoenician influence was reported as being 7% which is very low considering we were such close neighbours (closer than Greece) and for so long. I would have expected it to be greater since we now know, from antiquities, that the Cypriots and Phoenicians traded extensively.

One set of figures looking at some specific DNA, unique to Greeks and their descendants, which was found also in Greeks of Sicily occurs at the same frequency in Cypriots (something like 40%).

you dont have any evidence again so its very easy to invent stories. ask our president and y ou will get the answer you want .

What are you talking about? :?

By whom... your Greek nationalist friends?

The Cypriots and the Lebanese are one and the same people you Do-Do!

[That figure of 7% should be lower as it was an average going from Cyprus to Tunisia and would have been upwardly skewed because of the inclusion of the Maltese figures. I don't think the Greeks worry as much about such "identity" matters as you seem to!]

Seems the Maltese have a greater claim to being direct descendants of the Phoenicians (Lebanese) than us, GR! -- although as expected, we have mixed.

The guy that runs that site is a charlatan, Greeks went to that area many times over thousands of years! It's all about Jews and their lies, the Anglo's helped create this crap. A Jew fishing boat was caught many years ago dropping Phoenician artefacts off the coast of Crete, this was reported in the Greek magazine "Davlos", the Jews are trying to make a connection with the Phoenicians!

What about the poor old Hittites again? they were here (it was part of their empire before the Phonecians) long before greco roman times..
Oh well time for a swim.......

Some of what you said is wrong BOF. Cyprus was never part of the Hittite empire. The Phonecians did settle in Cyprus but they did so after the Greeks. Also I am not sure about what "greco roman" times you refer to. The Greeks came to Cyprus more than a 1000 years before Cyprus became part of the Roman empire.

And yes the Greek alphabet is based on the Phonecian one. Nothing ever comes out of nowhere. Even the modern day technologies are based on technologies and science that was developed gradually over 100s and 1000s of years.

Sure, others except from Greeks came to Cyprus, and in Cyprus we also had some pre-historic settlements like they existed everywhere. So what? Or maybe you think those who made Stonehenge were English? And what about Turkey, a territory which today is called Turkish even though before the Turks it was inhabited not just by prehistoric people but it was also the center of many other full blown civilizations.

No place is "pure" and made up by just one ethnicity, but Cyprus is far more Greek than "England" is English and "Turkey" is Turkish. We are talking about 3500 years of Greeks being the vast majority of the population of this island. Neither Turkey, nor England, nor most other places come anywhere close to this.

Ask Bof head about Ryan Giggs who is 1/4 Negro, Kate Beckinsale who is part Burmese, David Beckham part Jew or the Jewish blood that flows threw all of those East end London/Essex people.

The public should be cautious with regard to wild statements such as that "half of the Maltese are of Phoenician origin" and even more of the purveyors of testing kits supposedly intended to predict ancestry but based on weak science as I explained above. Contrary to the opinion of Bovingdon and Borg, it seems to me that the simplest explanation that cannot be excluded by any of the scientific data thus far available is that Malta was indeed barely inhabited at the turn of the tenth century.

Yialountza you are very confused .Are you saying that Maltese are greeks also ? or they have their own ethnicity ? or are they maltesers?

You are a big YiaLountza !
