Who were the Phoenicians?

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

The University of Cyprus should undertake this research as it will contradict our distorted history books.

The percentage from Phoenician influence was reported as being 7% which is very low considering we were such close neighbours (closer than Greece) and for so long. I would have expected it to be greater since we now know, from antiquities, that the Cypriots and Phoenicians traded extensively.

One set of figures looking at some specific DNA, unique to Greeks and their descendants, which was found also in Greeks of Sicily occurs at the same frequency in Cypriots (something like 40%).

Are these statistics for Cypriots DNA including Denktash DNA also?

[That figure of 7% should be lower as it was an average going from Cyprus to Tunisia and would have been upwardly skewed because of the inclusion of the Maltese figures. I don't think the Greeks worry as much about such "identity" matters as you seem to!]

Seems the Maltese have a greater claim to being direct descendants of the Phoenicians (Lebanese) than us, GR! -- although as expected, we have mixed.

Yeah, that's been a problem in the past, EPSILON. So the figures have to be reappraised taking this situation into account. Interestingly, recent studies segregate the Seljuk Turks from aboriginal or native Anatolian dwellers which are descendants of Greeks, Armenians, Kurds, Syrians etc and not the recent Mongolian-derived ones.

you dont have any evidence again so its very easy to invent stories. ask our president and y ou will get the answer you want .

Another study show tanother % have an Syrian others have Israel others italian and others Egyptian origin which makes the rest who have the Greek origin very low a . hio ho ho IOr ask our President who has been voted by the majority.

For me it does not need a study to prove this . Only switching to a Greek Chanel its enough to prove how different we are to them .

MY advise on Greek TV : PLEASE Stop this pornography on TV . you dont become intelligent by showing your tits !Or maybe this is the only way left to get attention    :(

The most complete study of Greek skeletal material from Neolithic to modern times was carried out by American anthropologist J. Lawrence Angel who found that in the early age racial variability in Greece was 7% above average, indicating that the Greeks had multiple origins within the Europid racial family. Angel noted that from the earliest times to the present “racial continuity in Greece is striking.” Buxton who had earlier studied Greek skeletal material and measured modern Greeks, especially in Cyprus, finds that the modern Greeks “possess physical characteristics not differing essentially from those of the former [ancient Greeks].”
The most extensive study of modern Greeks has been carried by the Greek anthropologist Aris N. Poulianos. Poulianos’ study included the collection and study of more than seventy anthropometric measurements from a large sample of thousands of Greeks from different parts of the country. His main conclusions are that both Greeks and their neighboring populations are basically a mixture of Aegeans (a Mediterranean type local to the area) and Epirotics (Dinarics(e)) and are descended from the ancient inhabitants of the lands in which they live.

Repopulation

The public should be cautious with regard to wild statements such as that "half of the Maltese are of Phoenician origin" and even more of the purveyors of testing kits supposedly intended to predict ancestry but based on weak science as I explained above. Contrary to the opinion of Bovingdon and Borg, it seems to me that the simplest explanation that cannot be excluded by any of the scientific data thus far available is that Malta was indeed barely inhabited at the turn of the tenth century.
