When to let go ? (a little).

Postby purdey » Sat Sep 12, 2009 5:35 pm

I put my 14 year old daughter on the train earlier today for the first time (on her own).
She went to the cinema with a friend in the local town, 20 miles away. We worried a little but did our homework, mobile charged, guard on train (friend) to keep an eye out. All went well until she arrived at the local Starbucks. She bought hot chocolate but was abruptly told " not to
sit around all day with one drink" charming eh
So off she trots to the cinema to watch some kids film (12a). Been 14 she asks for a child ticket, only to be asked " what's your DOB " so she replies with answer. To her shock she is told I don't believe you and an adult ticket price is demanded. So she pays and then rings Daddy for help !
So in short, I worried about her in the big town, train because of her age but public perception seems to think she is over sixteen, a liar and has nowhere to go !

I had a brief chuckle there Purdey. From the way you put it, it sounds like it's the first time you've had to face such dilemma.

You poor thing, I have these feelings too and Im only preparing myself as my daughter Amelia (Millie) is only 12.
onight she is going her friends birthday party at her house.
"DONT GO OUTSIDE, RING ME AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT, DONT GO OFF WITH ANY ONE AT ALL" ETC ETC.
Its scarey you know, and to be cruel to be kind I felt the need to pollute her innocent little mind a very long time ago of what could happen if she went off with a stranger etc.
So sad that a mother should have to do these things to keep our babies safe from the monsters out there.
Your daughter did real good by calling dad!!

It's damned depressing, how we have to instill thorough distrust of strangers in our children, to the point of frightening them. But given the threats out there, we have no choice.

You just take no notice of any ripping.
i find the worst people to undeerstand are those who are not parents!
Its tricky because its a big world out there, and the only way our children are going to learn about it is to let them go exlore and have independence, its just the thought right now makes me feel ill.
I will do my best to decide on where my son and daughter can and cant go, and if anyone other than their daddy has a problem with it, its just damn tough on them as i make the judgements on weather they are going to be safe or not...no one else...
ignore them!

The one time I agreed my son could walk home from school (once he turned 12) with his mates ... I followed 50 yards behind with the pretext that I was walking the dog. Just as well too, as they spotted a red sports car on the other side of the road and all immediately, like a herd, without looking left or right, ran across the road to inspect ... with me screaming "STOP" in the background ... just in time!

No problems whilst we were still in Cyprus ... he walked home, after school, worry free!

Time and place ...
