In uk my children are attending very small schools literally in the middle of knowhere, surrounded by fields, but I never ever take it for granted for worst couldnt happen.
that story reminded me of a time when my daughter was around the age of 8.
walking my daughter home from school and at the same time pushing baby in his pram, Milly was running down a hill with her long plaites in her hair! on the pavement getting closer and closer to the road.
She couldnt but i could see the car approaching!
After calling her alot to stop to the extent everyone wondered what on earth was going on!
But no the madam kept running, the pram wouldnt allow me to run, so my only choice was to shout "If you dont stop Im going to pull your plaites"!!
I felt terrible after for saying that to her, but it did make her stop!!

Still touching on this subject, I'd like to know: do you think the parents of little Maddy were negligent in leaving her and their other small children in their rental while dining? For all that I feel deeply for them, I do.

How many other parents have done the same thing, lots I would imagine. It seems when we go on holiday abroad we always forget about safety and lose all inhabitions and think cos we are on holiday nothing can happen.

Never done it. Too many crazies out there, if you have kids you should not leave them unprotected even for 5 minutes.

You are quite right Purdey - But I have seen it for myself, parents sitting on beaches sunbathing kids running around with no-one watching them. Then seeing those parents later in the hotel restuarant disappearing one at a time over the course of the evening.

NEVER..wouldnt dream of it.
We were in an airpirt once in uk a few years ago, sitting having a juice my daughter wanted to explore the airport.
I had noticed a lady watching me and listening to me sticking to my word, when after approx 10 mins, I realised who she was..she was the mum of one of the girls from the Soham murders.
It made me feel really sad and will always wonder what she was thinking whilst watching and listening to me...

Nerve-wracking experiences - letting your children 'go'. They 'grow-up' but you never stop worrying about them.

I do not mind being a 'taxi' when needed, but if I am unavailable to do so for whatever reason, I get my children to text me with the registration number of the taxi and the make and colour of the car. If they are not home soon after calls are made. Call me neurotic, I don't care, I just want my kids to be safe.

It's sad that we have to act this way in this day and age, but the world is full of 'crazy people'! :(
