i was reading that the turks have not gained much from the invasion. they got a chunk of cyprus and 'rescued' some people but one site i was reading was blaming the usa and Britian. now between them they both have very nice military bases. how convenient...................

demetriou

the turks went almost bankrupt because of the invasion. Economically it set them back decades. It now costs them to keep troops on cyprus and to support the northern cyprus economy.

the reason for the invasion was to prevent total greek rule of cyprus, and to prevent what could and probably would have been a tc bloodbath. As a conseqence Turkey strengthened her southern coast-line.

well thats how i see it. It was not a part of expansionist land grab, and once a settlement is reached turkey will probably have as much to do with cyprus as greece does. Turkey and cyprus will however benefit from trade once a solution is reached.

it was never under threat. cyprus could not do anything. they have 1 plane and a few row boats. there was never a threat

what was the need to take 38%? at most 20 or 25 % would of comfortably provide living space.

Yes demetriou I know that turkeys coastline was never under threat, but if you stand on the west coast of turkey you can spit into greek waters, metaphorically speaking. Its just that some gc’s have used this as a reason for turkeys invasion. It was a positive consequence for turkey but not a reason.

Why take more than 25%?– imo bargaining chips.
If they took twenty per cent we’d be negociating at 12% wouldn’t we?

Thats right, you should stop posting the name of what represents the ethnic cleansing, the killings, the rapes and the occupation of a big part of our country. Will you stop doing that, or you will continue insulting us and then complain if we respond?
