Fire in Chirokitia

A FIRE broke out yesterday east of Chirokitia and west of the Nicosia-Limassol highway, destroying four hectares of scrub, including carob-trees and olive-trees.

The fire started at around 11.30am and raged for over four hours before being brought under control by six fire service units and three vehicles of the game wardens service. At one point, strong winds threatened to spread the blaze to three homes, but preventive measures taken by Kofinou fire service averted the danger.

The fire is thought to have been started by a cigarette butt being thrown among some tree-cuttings. It took hold and spread rapidly due to the desiccated state of the scrub.

The Choirokitian police have announced that the suspected arsonist is a deranged 60 year-old in white socks & sandals seen hesitating in the area with a fuel canister!!!
