taxes for electronics from outside EU

Postby stefandem » Wed Sep 09, 2009 11:06 pm

anyone knows what is the maximum tax free amount for importing some cheap electronic devices from the US ?
I am interested to buy 50 flashlights from the US. each one costs $5
If I have them shipped together they will cost $250 so I will pay an extra tax at customs 15% for VAT plus 3,5 euros.
If I order them in multiple smaller quantities I can avoid paying for VAT
does anyone know which is the maximum tax free amount?
Shipping is free so, I don't care

If these are laser beam pointer flashlights by any chance, the law changed last year and you may find yourself in a bit of a spot when they check the package…

no way. they are normal flash lights. no laser pointers

also, not all laser pointers are disallowed. there are some restrictions in mW (their power)

My experience is that the rules are somewhat random and made up 'on the fly'...

If you search other threads here, people have managed to purchase digital cameras and camcorders (costing hundreds of $) from the 'states with no duty being paid at all...

Others get 'caught' when bringing in much smaller value items.

I bought a projector lamp from the 'states because it was sooo much cheaper than in the EU. By the time I'd paid the duty it actually cost more...

I agree with you but, I just wanted to know if there is a limit.
Worst thing is that they now know the "GIFT" trick and they do not accept it anymore.
another point to have in mind is that the exchange rate (USD-EUR) they use is updated every first wednesday of each month. Sometimes this is good and sometimes it's bad.
