Postby halil » Wed Sep 09, 2009 10:52 pm

Mr Gul met with two members of the Elders group, the former Algerian Foreign Minister Lakhdar Al Brahimi and the former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland.

During the meeting, Mr Gul explained Turkey’s views and policy it has been carrying out on the Cyprus issue.

Stressing that Turkey always has a constructive approach towards the Cyprus issue, Mr Gul said `the Yes vote to the Annan Plan which was put to referendum in 2004 is the sign of this constructive approach`.

He also stressed that Turkey has been showing the necessary will to solve not only the problem Cyprus problem but all the problems facing the world.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul has repeated his call to the European Union to honor its promises and lift the isolation on the Turkish Cypriots .

Members of the group Brahimi and Brundtland are expected to travel to the Greek capital of Athens and South Cyprus in the coming days.

THE ELDERS GROUP IS TOURING THE REGION TO EXPRESS ITS SUPPORT TO THE TALKS IN CYPRUS

TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat has received members of “the Elders Group”.
No statement was issued during the meeting between the President and two members of the group, the former Algerian Foreign Minister Lakhdar Al Brahimi and the former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland.

The Elders are holding discussions on both sides of the island and Ankara and Greece to express their support to the ongoing peace process in Cyprus and to promote the interest of the international community in the process.

The visit came just a day after the launch of the second round of the talks by Talat and Christofias.
