What would you all advise a young man who studies hard, keeps fit, passes his pilots exams with flying colors and two days before he is set to start his new job flying planes, suffers a detached retina?

I would say, "Have the surgery" ... poor thing!

P.S. Did you know the recuperation process for such surgery requires lying on your stomach with your face down for a period of 24 - 48 hours?
