A "spy" could've easily gone through Ledra street on his own and made his way to the church anyway...

Well duh! Why did you bother checking in the first place instead of doing what the GCs did? (turn a blind eye) Or do you assume that the TC lists that went to Kokkina were perfect?

IT DIDN’T MATTER!

You’re missing the whole point of the “reciprocal” confidence building pilgrimages!

You appear to be missing the point, do we have the right to check ids? its up to us if we do or not you cannot dictate to us, thats in the past, you really have to ditch that mentality..

You appear to be missing the point. In the recognised world, which you aspire to join, people realise that rights come with responsibilities. You exercised a right afforded to you by Turkey's military might. That was irresponsible. You really have to ditch that mentality.

300 Turkish Cypriot piligrims to visit Hala Sultan Tekke
By Anna Hassapi

PRESIDENTIAL Commissioner George Iacovou yesterday dismissed reports in Turkish Cypriot newspaper Kibris that Turkish Cypriot pilgrims to Hala Sultan Tekke in Larnaca have requested to be escorted by Turkish mainland imams.

“Such a request has never come before us. The request, which came to my office today asks that 300 Turkish Cypriot pilgrims visit Hala Sultan Tekke on September 15. There is no mention whatsoever about imams in this text,” Iacovou told the Cyprus Mail.

According to the Kibris report there are not enough Turkish Cypriot imams to escort the hundreds of pilgrims expected to visit the Larnaca mosque next Tuesday, so imams from Turkey would have to join the group.

“The number of Turkish Cypriot imams is small so they will have to be escorted by imams from Turkey. I call the Greek Cypriot side not to mix the matter with politics, and grant the necessary license to imams from Turkey,” said Yousouf Souicmez, Head of Religious Services for the authorities in the North was quoted as saying by Kibris.

Iacovou, however, reiterated that Turkish nationals need a visa before they can cross the Green Line. “The Green Line Regulation states that without issuing a validation of their passport, crossing cannot take place for Turkish nationals,” Iacovou retorted.

Iacovou also noted that the request for the pilgrimage to Hala Sultan was being examined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but that no information had been received in relation to a demand for the entry of Turkish imams.

“There is also no special reason to have imams from Turkey and I was informed that the specific mosque’s imam shares this view,” he added.

The pilgrimage will take place to celebrate the holiest day in the Islamic calendar- the day of the first revelation of the Koran. According to Islam this was the day Archangel Gabriel ordered Mohammed to read the first verses from the Koran, written on a silk cloth.

Last week a trip by Greek Cypriot pilgrims to the north to attend the anniversary of Ayios Mammas was called off after the Turkish Cypriot side would not allow a number of people whose names did not appear on a pre-submitted list to cross.
