French Cypriots

Postby Sega » Mon Sep 07, 2009 10:31 pm

After going to a business meeting in Paris, France, I noticed that there were many races living under one city, similar to London, some of which were black and so on.

Anyhow, returning to the UK I bumped into some Turkish Cypriots. I was speaking Greek to my brother, and one of the older ladies understood we were Greek Cypriot from the way we spoke, she somewhat gave us dirty looks. Personally I love all people, irrespective of if they are Turks, I am hardly my grandad, but it's ashame that not all people can be like this.

Does anybody have any information on Cypriots in France?

They were flying to Cyprus, they looked Greek/Turkish (we kind of look the same), plus some of them had Turkish passports. I also had a hunch they were Turkish Cypriots. I am not trying to get into a debate of whether they were, or they were not Turkish Cypriots. Just wondering on Cypriots in France.

Je crois que il a demandé si il y a des Chypriots qui habitent la France et, si ils existent, si on peut donner un peu plus d'information sur ce point.

PS - Aplogies for breaking the forum rules, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to see if I am still capable of putting together a basic French sentence.

Je parle un petit per Francais. Did it for 6 years at school, but haven't used it for so long it has disappeared into the recesses of my mind. However I went to France a few years ago and it is amazing how quickly it starts to come back.

Yes there are Cypriots in Paris, and from the most unexpected places too.

My late cousin was there for years. He did his PhD on theatre and got involved in a project on the writer Kazantzakis. But the business acumen of the Cypriot was too strong and he found himself with two restaurants in the Quartier Latin and some valuable real estte in the area.

At the restaurant there were employees and clients from all areas of Cyprus.

One small note- all the Cypriots I met in France were GCs, i did not bump into any TCs.

There is also a large expat mainland Greek community in France, mostly in Paris.

Large, you think. I would not suppose it be anything like London. I personally do not have any relatives there. I have relatives in America, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweeden, Greece, UK but not in France, I suppose if I did there English would be very weak, similar to my French.

I did hear there were a few Cypriots there, but I did not see any. Like in the UK, Cypriots are born in the UK but they still class themselves as Cypriots, :) like me. The Cypriots you meet there were born in France?
