Erdogan:No concessions were made on Cyprus

Postby Lit » Mon Sep 07, 2009 7:34 pm

If no concessions were made from the Turkish side, then how can we possibly reach a solution on the Cyprus issue? Oh, i know! By showing the "TRNC" more goodwill? LOL
---

Erdogan defended his government’s policies on the Cyprus problem and said that no concessions were made on Cyprus

Illegal Bayrak television (05.09.09) broadcast the following:
“The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has defended his government’s policies on the Cyprus Problem, stating that never before did the Cyprus Turkish people gain so much, the sympathy, support and respect of the international community.

Speaking at an event in Istanbul, the Turkish premier pointed out that the TRNC has opened representation offices in more than 20 countries, has gained observer status at the Organization of Islamic Conference and is referred to within the organization as the Cyprus Turkish State, all as a result of his government’s proactive policies on the Cyprus Problem.

Responding to criticisms made against his government, Erdogan said “we adopted a proactive stance on the Cyprus Problem and were criticized for doing so. Then they accused us of selling out Cyprus. Could someone please tell me which one of these claims is true?”

He said that no concessions had been made on the Cyprus Issue.
The Turkish Prime Minister also pointed out that the respect and recognition TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat had earned from the international community today was incomparable to any other TRNC President or official in the past.”

Christofias: 'no concessions' on Cyprus problem

CNA

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias said yesterday that he has made no concessions on the Cyprus problem, adding that he has no intention of doing so in the future.

Any such move, he said, would be harmful for the people of Cyprus and efforts to reach a settlement of the island's political problem. He said the Cyprus problem should be solved on a basis acceptable by the Greek Cypriot side too. Commenting on remarks by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat that the Turkish Cypriots should obtain at least 29% of the territory and that they had not agreed on giving back Morphou town, on the northwest, Christofias said negotiations through the media have never assisted the negotiations themselves. "I suspect Mr Talat is under pressure internally and from Turkey, to make such statements, which of course do not help," he added.

Asked if the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer was exerting pressure on political party leaders for a settlement, the president said this matter would be looked into. "I am not a political leader. Mr Downer would not dare say something like that to me. I do not know what he has been saying to the political leaders.

These are matters to be investigated. I will speak with the political leaders," Christofias said. He added that the whole matter demanded caution and that "the main aim is not to make enemies but to win friends." President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008, with an aim to reunite the island. -

These kinds of statements should make us all ask what we are negotiating about. If the oether side is not prepared to negotiate then the status quo is the best choice.

Thanks....Christofias said this on August 25, 2009:

http://www.financialmirror.com/News/Cyp ... News/16999

Christofias stressed that “each Cypriot, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, should bear responsibility for the election of the President and the Vice President on a common ballot. In that sense and under this condition, we have accepted the rotating presidency, in the context of the current negotiations” for a political settlement, he said.

He explained that in a six year presidency term, the President during the first four years will be a Greek Cypriot and the Vice President a Turkish Cypriot, and during the last two years they will change offices.

“This safeguards the unity of the people, the unity of the social classes and not the unity of the one or the other community”, he stressed.

So what do you call a rotating presidency?
