and now for the british bases.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

and now for the british bases.

NICOSIA [MENL] -- The Republic of Cyprus has expressed increasing opposition to the British military presence in the divided island.

Greek Cypriot officials and legislators have called for the end of the British military presence in Cyprus. They said the two British bases take up a large amount of territory that could be used for civilian development.

On Thursday, the Cypriot House of Representatives unanimously adopted a resolution that would limit the British military presence on the island. The resolution called on the British military not to use its bases for offensive missions and to respect the rights of Cypriots living within the areas of these facilities.

"The United Kingdom has no sovereignty over the territory of the British bases, even in the context of the Treaty of Establishment, but a commitment to merely use this territory for specific military purposes," the resolution said.

Get them out. It's taking the piss that they are using our island as a base to attack Iraq, when about 99% of Cypriot opposed the actions of Britian and America in the Iraq invasion.

Getting them out all together may not be the best solution as i'm sure the UK has major interests due to the location and could strain ties. Furthermore, the bases provide civilian jobs for cypriots as well as injects money into local economy from 4000 british servicemen.

I think what the government is proposing is the best option.

If they want to attack any other middle eastern country i'm sure American can do it from thier bases in Turkey who are closer to all the action.

It's the same "game" Turkey has been playing for years with the "US" bases there. The US can use these bases for certain purposes, with the Turkish permission, and the agreement lasts only one year. Every year, Turkey bargains the use of the bases for something "extra".

britain is taking cyprus for a ride...they havent paid rent for tha bases in years...which they were suppost to do.

I say they should go , but not before unification.

After reunification, i believe the british bases could be used to rally TCs and GCs into trying to get them out....

rather than after reunification, they have nothing to look forward to doing together...something they all believe in...do you see what i mean?

but the turks have no intrest in it. why should they 'not be friends' with britain for something they will not benifit from??? i say that as a few decades of rent they go away. only a matter of time before terrorists begin to attack the british bases if they keep going to war because lord holy king of the world GWB says so

In a way it's true. Since the bases are legally British sovereign territory, the rent is not for the land itself, but for the facilities provided by the RoC government for the operation of the bases. I believe that since 1974, Britain has (wrongly) not paid this sum.

Their sovereignty is limited. It is not like you think.
Anyway the RoC chose so far to leave the matter flu.I consider the Parliament declaration more of a warning to British hostile policy against RoC.If this continues the Bases will be out for sure.Notice they cannot function not for a single day without the "cooperation" of RoC.

Maybe you have forgotten, that the RoC may not function a single day as well without the cooperation of the Brits! Have you got the clearance from them for your the statement, that the sovereignity of the bases is limited?
