No! I did go to bed later than usual though!
Both ok and no hangover!

Alcohol is one of those words with dodgy origins (bit like "fuck" ... popular preference puts it at Germanic, but there is no real evidence for that and many variations vying for association). The Arab word that's nearest to alcohol is the word for "kohl" the black eye-liner which in fact has very little to do with alcohol. But the Arabs spent a few hundred years copying, translating and transcribing the ancient Greek Medical texts ... so it's hard to attribute much to them, originally.
However ... is it Ethanol we are in fact discussing? ... In which case that is from the Greek for ether ....
Definitely not. I began with the word 'alcohol'.

Well then as you pointed out ... the word "alcohol" was reintroduced to the Arabs who until then only had a word for eyeliner ... (kohl)

One wonders what would be left of the English language without all the Greek and Latin based words?

There's nothing wrong with borrowing words. And Greek is particularly suited to neologisms. So, let the English language evolve on the back of Greek ... just like everything else
