al kohl is the word you look for.

I stand corrected Deniz

is kohl something to do with distillation?

I think kohl was the black mascara used to darken middle-eastern beauties eyes (mascara). This was a product of burning alcohol.

Etymology
Look up alcohol in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
The word alcohol appears in English in the 16th century, loaned via French from medical Latin, ultimately from the Arabic الكحل (al-kuḥl, "the kohl, a powder used as an eyeliner").

ال al is Arabic for the definitive article, the in English.

The current Arabic name for alcohol is الكحول al-kuḥūl, re-introduced from western usage.

kuḥl was the name given to the very fine powder, produced by the sublimation of the natural mineral stibnite to form antimony sulfide Sb2S3 (hence the essence or "spirit" of the substance), which was used as an antiseptic and eyeliner.

Alcohol is one of those words with dodgy origins (bit like "fuck" ... popular preference puts it at Germanic, but there is no real evidence for that and many variations vying for association). The Arab word that's nearest to alcohol is the word for "kohl" the black eye-liner which in fact has very little to do with alcohol. But the Arabs spent a few hundred years copying, translating and transcribing the ancient Greek Medical texts ... so it's hard to attribute much to them, originally.

However ... is it Ethanol we are in fact discussing? ... In which case that is from the Greek for ether .... :D
