Christian houses in Istanbul marked

Postby Lit » Sat Sep 05, 2009 5:30 pm

Christian houses in the Ferikoy und Kurtulus, areas in Istanbul, where many Armenians and Greeks live, were marked with red or green labels in the past weeks, Die Presse reported.

The labels appear to be in conjunction with complaints from Christians about increasing harassment, according to Sehabat Tuncel, a member of parliament asked in a parliamentary questioning.

Besir Atalay, minister of interior, is now forced to answer these allegations. “Who affixed these markings?” is only one of the questions cited by the press. The ministry must also make clear whether the police received orders to take action and investigate.

The marking on Christian buildings in Istanbul is a reminder of pogrom against Christian minorities in September 1955. Back then Christian buildings and shops had been marked by nationalist activists. The bloody riots with dozens of dead in Istanbul and Izmir were ostensibly triggered by the Cyprus conflict; however, the true reason was the search for scapegoats at a time of economic recession for Turkey.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Joint Armenian-Turkish monument is projected in Turkey, Ertugrul Gunay , minister of culture and tourism of Turkey said at the event dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Sivas Congress. “Until we have no project, but we have intention and opportunity. Even Alparslan Tyurkesh proposed such an idea. We want peace reigned both inside our country and outside. And joint memorials, academic papers, development of cultural ties, this is one of the ways,” Ertugrul Günay said, Milliyet wrote.

As PanARMENIAN.Net was informed, days of Armenian culture in the province of Mush are projected to hold this fall with assistance of Turkey's ministry of culture. RA ministry of culture has no information of these events. A number of non-governmental organizations have initiated this in Armenia. Moreover, Days of Armenian books are expected to be launched in coming spring in Mush.

Alparslan Tyurkesh was the leader of the Turkish ultra-nationalist "Party of nationalist action” and the "Gray Wolves" radical organization.
