CEREMONIES WILL BE HELD FOR MARTYRS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THE DEFENSE OF YESILIRMARK VILLAGE
The 35th anniversary of the liberation of Yesilirmak village, at the westernmost point of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will be celebrated with two special ceremonies tomorrow.
The day celebrated by Yesilirmak villagers as ‘Resistance and Integration Day’ marks the anniversary of the village’s integration with the remaining Turkish Cypript territory after the 1974 operation.
The first ceremony where martyrs who fell during the resistance put up against the Greek-Greek Cypriot onslaught in 1974 will be remembered, will be held at village Martyrdom at 04.15 in the afternoon.
A second ceremony will then be held in front of the Ataturk Monument where speeches will be delivered and poems will be read to mark the significance of the day.
Yesilirmak villagers celebrate the day as the ‘Resistance and Integration Day’, marking the anniversary of the day when the village had integrated into the Turkish Cypriot territory at the end of a struggle waged by Cyprus Turkish fighters; twenty days after the Turkish Peace Operation in 1974.
Meanwhile, the President of the Society of Martyrs’ Families and Disabled War Veterans Ertan Ersan in a message issue to mark the day said that the struggle waged by Yesilirmak’s resistance fighters had become a source of pride for future generations.
Stressing that the Turkish Cypriot People will never abandon its statehood, Ersan said that it was high time the international community accepted the realities on the island and understood the Turkish Cypriots are determined to safeguard their rights at all costs.
The society President also called on the international community which recognizes the Greek Cypriots as the sole owners of the island to exercise common sense and to analyze carefully the political realities on the island.
