Liberty, Equality, Fraternity - Cypriot-French Revolution! :D

France supports efforts for Cyprus solution

03.SEP.09

France has pledged its support towards efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias said after a working lunch he had yesterday with his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris.

Chistofias and Sarkozy discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, relations between the two countries and Turkey`s EU accession course in view of the European Commission`s assessment in December.

Speaking to the press, Christofias said he was very pleased with the outcome of the meeting.

"France, as President Sarkozy has said, has been supporting Cyprus right from the first start and will continue to do so until Cyprus is vindicated, on the right basis, always defending principles,” he said.

On bilateral relations, Christofias pointed out that they are at a very good level, adding that both he and Sarkozy have authorised their respective foreign ministers to be in constant contact to prepare documents and agreements, to be signed between the two countries as soon as possible.

The solution should be functional, based on UN resolutions and human rights conventions and fundamental freedoms, he stressed.

French carrier arriving in Limassol

LIMASSOL – The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will be sailing into Limassol port Friday where it will remain until Thursday, March 18.

While in Cyprus, the French carrier and the National Guard will be carrying out search and rescue exercises, air transport manoeuvres and military drills in the context of a defence agreement signed in 2007, between Cyprus and France.

Defence Minister Costas Papacostas, accompanied by National Guard Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Petros Tsalikides and Defence Ministry Permanent Secretary Petros Kareklas, was expected to board the ship today (Thursday) to watch an aircraft take off and landing demonstration, at the invitation of Admiral Philippe Coindreau.

Like Cyprus, Sarkozy's country of origin, Hungary, endured many, many years of Ottoman rule. It's fair to say Turkey, to this day, isn't the favourite country of most Hungarians.

I'm afraid not, runaway. Indigenous Hungarians (the Magyars), like many others in Europe, tend to despise Turks as a result of what happened to their ancestors at the hands of the Ottomans. Turkey still has a hell of a lot of PR work to do.

The term Turkic represents a broad ethno-linguistic group of people including existing societies such as the Azerbaijani, Kazakhs, Tatar, Kyrgyz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uyghur, Uzbeks, and as well as past civilizations such as the Huns, Kumans, Avars, Seljuks, Khazars, Ottomans, Mamluks, Timurids, and possibly the Xiongnu.
