If nothing else this deal reinforces my befief that the US has always been the key to solving the Cyprus problem, one wonders why it hasn't bothered to intervene before.

It troubles me that Cyprus is not on the list of "things to do". I just hope the USA is not thinking of giving Turkey a few "sweeteners" so that it will cooperate on other matters.

What's wrong with a few sweeteners , so long as it includes Cyprus?

I always had you down as a Turkish Cypriot and not a Turk of Cyprus, so why do you want to see your island gifted to a foreign country?

Today's Radikal, the highbrow Turkish daily which has for some time been flying the kite in favour of a democratic solution to the Kurdish problem, carries the banner headline "Peace in Cyprus":

Upon closer examination, this is the story of the meeting between Turkish Cypriot Fethi Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot Yiannis Meratheftis whom the former thought he had killed in 1974 (hardly breaking news now).

Why has this paper chosen to sport this headline? Could this be the first indication that a fresh 'Cyprus initiative' is to be launched in Turkey? Time will tell.
