Marateftis explained how he was shot in the head by Fethi Akinci during the Cyprus conflict in 1974 and said it was the first time he had returned to the place where he was shot.
‘I hope that the Cyprus problem will be solved in a peaceful way’ said Marateftis and added that the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots can live in peace and far away from war.
Fethi Akinic for his part said that he was very saddened by the events that happened in the past and added that this conflict had not benefited anyone.
Noting that it was not only the Turkish Cypriots or the Greek Cypriots that had suffered during the war but Turkey and Greece as well, Mr. Akinci expressed the hope that the future generation will live in peace and won’t live the bitter experiences of the past.
The head of the Lefke Vakif Research Committee Adnan Senturk who organized the gathering and Greek Cypriot writer Panikos Neokleus also attended the event and expressed their joy at witnessing such a reunion.
