What became of the Turkish communities in Muslim countries ?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

What became of the Turkish communities in Muslim countries ?

Postby GreekForumer » Sun Aug 30, 2009 6:05 am

The abrupt collapse of the Ottoman Empire left many Turkish communities stranded in independent nations. The Turks in Christian nations like Greece and Bulgaria for example.

The Turks (Turkmens) of Iraq were in the media this month because of their opposition to the Kirkuk referendum. There was also a terrorist attack against the Turkmens that was reported.

There are quite a few Muslim nations that were once Ottoman territories.

What became of the Turkish communities stranded in the new Muslim countries ? Nations like Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Lebanon.

Good morning.

This TC knows very little. What little I do know is that in Trablus-garb (Tripoli - another Greek word  ) There were only a handful of soldiers representing the province at the time of the Second Balkan war. They were mainly officers under the command of Mustafa Kemal. At the out break of the Balkan Wars, they left and all went to fight on the Balkan front. I have not come accross mention of any civilians.

Later on I had an Ethiopean student. I was talking to some other TC students (in the UK). She understood what we were talking about. Upon questioning her, she said that they had a Turkish quarter in her town and theyhad descended from Turkish families through intermarriage and assimilation. Her grandparents and mother would speak Turkish she claimed.

I know of some Egyptian Turkish descent families, but most of these were originally from Albanian stock. Just like the Egyptian Royalty. King Farouk was of Turco-Albanian descent ( If I am not wrong ).

In Lawrence of Arabia the exodus of Turkish civilians by train was well depicted. If you remember - a whole train load was ambushed by the English hero and his murderous tribesmen and masacred.

I expect over time they became assimilated with the locals – on the basis, as Talat would say, of 'osmosis' – and lived happily ever after in a united country with the same rights and obligations as everyone else.

I just remembered another student from Prstina, Kosovo. He identified himself as being 'Turkish' as opposed to being a 'moslem' Kosovan. Some remnants there but manly assimilated. Most Kosovans over 50 can understand Turkish.

insan, you are quite free to create a "what became of Turkish communities stranded in the ex-USSR" thread.

In this thread I am interested in Turkish communities that were stranded in Muslim countries , like the Turkmens of Iraq I mentioned above. We really can't describe the USSR as a Muslim country, can we ?
