Why doesn't Turkey drop Cyprus?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Why doesn't Turkey drop Cyprus?

Postby Oracle » Sun Aug 30, 2009 12:53 am

Why do Turks continue to use the name Cyprus, at all? Either as "Turks of Cyprus", or in "TRNC", or that other shitty neolithic sounding settlement "KKTC" .... why "honour" us? They've changed all the village names, after all.

Cyprus has had it's name since Roman times, when Turks did not even exist in these parts ... So, the name has no historical significance for Turks and since they don't recognise the RoC and have effectively (as far as they pretend) annexed the 40% of Cyprus they stole ... why continue to use our historical name for Cyprus?

Why don't they go the whole hog and rename it something completely different?
(and I don't mean "Kibris")

Why then does the government in Skope continue to use the name Macedonia despite Greek objections, or why does Mexico retain it's official title of "The United States?". Names are shared and used a lot around the world, and Cyprus is no execption, Oracle.

I don't know about Mexico, but the people of FYROM wish to be identified with the historical Macedonia and its cultural heritage.

Why would Turkey continue to use a name in existence long before they came to Asia Minor (they renamed that area) and with whose original history they do NOT identify.

They had no qualms renaming the villages. Why stop there?

The Turks are not respectors of the traditions of other people. So, why do they do us the "honour" of keeping our traditional, historical name?

There must be an underlying reason they hang on to the name Cyprus .... of some benefit to Turkey!

Maybe it is because Cyprus (the name) pre-dates Greece. Turkey changes Greek names as they view Greece as the interloper, but as the name Cyprus was in place before Turkey came to be, then they retain it on that basis.

How about calling it whatever's Turkish for:

"Teeny-weeny-murky-Turkey"
"Turkey's-toilet" or
"What-genocide?"
"The-EU-is-racist"
"Embargoed-forever"
"Oramia" or
"Barracks-for-40,000-troops" or
"See?-the-Ottoman-Empire-is-alive-and kicking!" or
"Nobody-likes-us-we-say-we-don't-care"
"For-sale...-one-previous-owner-well-looked-after" "Isn't-that-where-those-stupid-donkeys-who-we-hoodwinked-into-thinking-they-were-Turks-before-shafting-them-like-donkeys-live?".

Come on Turks, use your imagination!

I am not complaining that Turks are hanging on to the name Cyprus ... I question their motives for so doing!

1. Is it that they see the famous, trusted, loved name of Cyprus as just a corporate logo?

2. Do they gain prestige by holding on to the "brand-name" Cyprus?

Or ....

3. Is it simply that dropping the name Cyprus from any of their "constructs" will be one step too many, which will bring the EU ripping into Turkey once and for all time!

Is Turkey too chicken to drop the only recognised name? :D
