I’d reverse the question and ask those who call themselves “Cypriot” why they refuse to drop Turkey or Greece…

Then it wouldn't make sense because Greece doesn't call Cyprus anything other than Cyprus, since it recognises it for being Cyprus.
Turkey has tried all sorts of labels and name changes yet all still inclusive of the name Cyprus (which it doesn't apparently recognise), such as "KKTC" and "TRNC". The label "Turks of Cyprus" suggests they recognise the sovereignty of Cyprus.
The argument was why they cannot drop the name Cyprus ...

I think because of the historical significance of the name Cyprus (being one of the oldest names for a country), dropping it would unleash international condemnation such that Turkey would lose the status quo it maintains by doing things piecemeal (continuing to use the name Cyprus)...

The simplest answer to the thread title is that it had never occured to them.

Go back to sleep Nikos.

Q3: Will Greece and Turkey ever abandon Cyprus?
A3: Well duh! Will you ever stop inviting them?
Still don’t get it?
If and when you all STOP from inviting Greece and Turkey over, they won’t come anymore!
