The Cyprus problem is a modern day anomaly, where Turkey has ethnically cleansed the indigenous population and altered the demographics of a sovereign nation. Nicosia is the only divided capital in the world. All this happened in 1974 and between 160,000-200,000 people are still denied the right to return to their homes. okay JB, trying to get any infromation thats unbias on the forum is impossible. each side has their pros, and cons.

if you want the truth then let a fellow Greek Cypriot American tell you. Cyprus has been around for ages with many invasions, occupations, and other things like that. but to answer your question for the current GC(Greek Cypriot)-TC(Turkish Cypriot) dispute is complicated. Greeks and Turks have never got along since probably ancient times. And Both sides claim they have equal rights to the island because they both claim that they have had an ethnical presence on the island for many years. but the cause of the invasion was because of an attack on the Cypriot government by Greek extremists from Greece. they sided with EOKA(The Cypriot national guard) and tried to over throw the president at the time (Makarios)and make it part of Greece(also known as ENOSIS). Turkey, seeing that their fellow Turkish Cypriots were being attacked, sent in 200,000 troops to protect their people. but Turkey then siezed the northern part of Cyprus and established their own, illegal government which only Turkey acknowledges. Turkey still occupies the island militarily to this day. i hope that answers your question, as i believe this explanition to be unbias. i may not have gotten everything, but that should help you a little.

Sorry but this part is wrong. No Turkish Cypriots were attacked in 1974 before the invasion. So Turkey did not invade because it saw TCs being attacked!

Turkey intervened to restore the constitutional order violated by one of the guarantors Greece and it's extensions in Cyprus.

When Turkey arrived Cyprus to restore the constitutional order, not only the coupists and major part of NG under command of Sampson but all GCs who were able to combat(CIA report mentions around 50.000 armed GCs and Greeks) engaged a counter offensive against Turkish Peace Forces. Thus, both sides suffered great number of human losses.

During the combat, vast majority of TCs who were living in Souther part of Cyprus fled to Northern part and GCs who were living in Northern part of Cyprus fled to Souther part of Cyprus in order to save their lives.

Even after the 2nd phase of Turkish intervention, the pro-coupist, irregulars of EOKA-B were still threatening the newly installed president of Cyprus, ex-president-Makarios and Turkey with waging a guerilla warfare.

Folowing the events of 1974, talks initiated in Vienna, Geneva etc regarding the restoration of the constitution but since then no mutually agreed solution has been found.

Their island was not under attack by Turkish peace Forces, their government was under control of an illegal administration. First the pro-coup armed forces fired towards heading Turkish peace forces. Don't forget that how much this islands belongs to GCs as much it belongs to TCs.
